The thought of petrol went through my head yesterday when I filled up at Reading (Calcot) sainsburys for 139.9
A gallon at that price, is £6.36... so at 27.5 mpg, which I average in the Jag unless I'm 'playing' - that's only 23p per mile... so 100 miles costs me £23.
I agree £1.40 looks very high, but mile for mile, based on the above, that's really not that bad, in a big, V6 comfy car?
Ultimately, if I had a smaller, 50mpg car, I'd be looking at 100 miles for around £12. Which is 12p per mile, and excellent value motoring.
I guess the price we're paying is largely because of our choice of big engined heavy cars?
I drive everyday a BMW 520d which averages currently 44.7 MPG, it's a heavy car, very comfy and quiet, it doesn't have a big engine and it's very good on fuel. That doesn't excuse the fact that the cost of fuel is outrageous.
Okey Dokey, well diesel is obviously a little more than petrol, so say you're paying 145.9p for a litre of diesel, a gallon is £6.64. At 44.7MPG, that's almost bang on 15p per mile.
In more realistic terms, that's £15 for 100 miles average driving in your car.
I know fuel is more than it used to be - but I still don't class 100 miles for £15 in a comfy car as 'outrageous'?
I do
.
well dell you should swap the bmw for my van for a week you would be well pissed off, i wouldnt

This is another point, you use your van for work, you have too. Luckily due to the nature of what I do, I can choose a number of cars to drive on a day to day basis, but for you who has to use a van which is pretty heavy on fuel it's not on. Your cost of living hasn't gone down, and your wages probably haven't gone up, yet your fuel costs have gone up loads over the past say 3-4 years.
