Oil quality monitor ........
« on: 08 March 2013, 18:56:57 »

My Mk4 Mondeo is fitted with an oil quality monitor which will prompt for an early oil service if needed. I hope to never see it come on as I am changing the oil every 3,000 miles anyway.

My question is how exactly do these work? Is it a chage of an optical characteristic perhaps?

AFAIK this systems only calculate when the next oil change should be - depending on driving style...etc....
My opinion...you 'll get less than expected out of your car if relaying on that sensor. And that's the main purpose of this sensors

Maybe on some Merc you'll get sensor which electricaly tests conductivity of oil inside the sump but definately not in Ford or GM

Fords are quite complex nowadays they use low saps oil and i wouldnt be surprised if it did have sensors. Longlife oil was designed designed to work with how you drive. I get asked how ling does longlife oil last? It could20k it could be 3k depending how you drive and what journeys you do

They only have a pressure sensor, the oil life is calculated based on pressure and useage
