I almost got caught out by some 'growers' that I rented a house to, that they intended to convert into a 'herbal factory'.....  ::)

Luckily for me my house was the last in a long line of houses that they had rented and converted into factories when they got nicked, so it was relatively intact!!  ::)

Anyway the point of the story which will be of interest to Ozzy, is that the Copper told me that an average bedroom full of 6ft healthy plants is worth around £300,000 at street prices!!  :o

Too be honest that seems quite a lot to me so lets assume that figure covers the lifetime of the plants with several harvests.  :-\

Should just about cover your Bedroom Tax Ozzy??  :)

PS ... And no the growers didn't get their deposit back!!!  ;D

I know an old couple on state benefits who have been given a huge house, the kids have all left home, loads of empty bedrooms but they won't be losing any benefits.   Not only that, they're immigrant stock - Germany and Greece would you believe.  Phil and Liz  Glücksburg are their (real) names.

Not affected by the benefit cap either - in fact Lizzie's benefits have just gone up 16% (from £31 million to £36.1 million) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/theroyalfamily/9966951/Queen-receives-16pc-increase-in-funding.html

Gawd bless er wurth evry pennee (doffs cap politely).

No these guys were professionals and were growing industrial quantities of the stuff.  Not only did they have about 10 terraced houses in the area but they had got into a boarded up snooker hall, an empty cinema and had rented an industrial unit on a trading estate!!  :o

They got caught when the boss got pulled over for a tail light out on his car, and when they ran him through the PNC he was wanted by West Midlands police...  ::)  You're probably right about the exaggerated street value though.  :)

I just find the whole idea absolutely crazy >:(

So you can't have a spare room and have visitors ???
We have a housing crisis, there are not the properties available to allow downsizing....
I don't like to bring immigration into it, but facts must be faced......
Where are all the thousands of single immigrants from wherever living......in properties that people wishing to downsize could move into?? If not, then I assume every town is full of thousands of people sleeping rough or everyone has purchased or rented their own property. Again, taking homes out of the system for people already here.
How long will it be that us private home owners like me with a spare room are told to move out. >:(
Got to disagree, sorry.

Its a great idea, persuading people to downsize their taxpayer funded homes that are too big. And freeing up larger homes for those crammed in smaller properties. Its about making the best use of the assets you have, at the same time having your hands tied regarding public financies.

Pains me to say it, but good on the Tories for having the balls.

Trouble is, case-by-case is not viable, and too many scroungers can spin a story. So I believe in the first instance, this needs to be done blanket style, then reassess the situation.

Again, sadly, the scum of society have ruined it for the genuine, as in most walks of life.

I agree up to a point, TB. The council has a duty to get 'best value' from it's housing stock. However, this approach is only viable if there are enough smaller properties of an equal standard  in the same or adjacent area......which there are not. :-\

Therefore it simply a tax on the poor. :-\

......and that Opti is the key to all this.  It is not just a case of downsizing; it is a case of available choice which is non-existent, so the poorest of society have to pay as they have no-where to go!
