Manually adjusting electric seats
« on: 24 March 2013, 02:26:32 »

Hi Guys,

I have a 99s Omega 2.5TD Elite which has electric leather seats. Unfortunetly the car died on me recently by way of fire in the engine. Suspected cause is electric fault in the engine bay (near where the brake master cylinder etc is).

Needless to say I have no power in the car and need to remove the front seats as I'm breaking it as not worth claiming on insurance or repair. Unfortunately the fire had caused damage to majority of the wire behind the dash due to the heat melting them. As such, is there anyway I can manually adjust the seats so as to have access to the bolts to remove the seats.

Alternatively, I assume I can connect direct power to them via the battery to be able to adjust the seats. If so, does anybody know which wires I should connect power to so that I can adjust them?

Any assistance in resolving this would be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Kam

When new, the car would've had a long 1/4"-ish square drive cranked handle for such an event (I've never actually seen one though  ::) ) Under the seat, there's a square boss for the handle so you can wind the seat back & forward ...... apparently 10000 turns = 1/16" of seat movement  ::) ;D  ;D

I have never seen one in the flesh, but it's only a square, easy to make one to fit a cordless drill  ::)

Had first hand experience using one of those, in a scrap yard to remove some seats. Can confirm its 1,000,000,000 rotates to even see in move. So take a cup of tea out while doing this  :y

Because of the bend in the tool, would make using a drill interesting, lot of movement.  :-\

Well that is an option, tbh never thought of that.  ::)

But, it would render it useless without a drill.... if it was me I'd like two, one kept for winding second for drill.

How about taking a hacksaw to it & weld a nut on the end. You could then use it in a drill or stick a socket & ratchet on it  ::)

Or don't worry about it ............... I've never ever needed it in 11 yrs (touches wood)

Presume you don't have a problem hacking into the sill wiring loom.  Espacially if the main loom is toast anyway.

Remove the sill trim panel/cover thingy.  Follow the seat wiring plugs back to the main loom and you will see a red and a black wire that are substantially thicker than the others, these are the main power connections - they may be a different colour on later models but they will be obvious from their size.  Separate these from the main loom as far as you can and cut them.  Now just strip the ends, connect to a battery and the seats should work.  This is how I got the seats out of the Elite I had to send to the crusher last year and no damage done to the seats.

If you Elite an MV6, does that make it an MVee-leet?

Hi Guys,

I have only been able to work on the car a few hours at a time after work etc so apologies for not being on. However I have good news, I have managed to get all the seats out.

This was done using the cordless with the correct square bit ... and waiting. It was a good job I was using the cordless as it needed plenty of revs.

Needless to say i'm very happy and will have the ineterior for sale soon. Only downside is the driver side door card has been damaged from the heat from the fire.

Does anybody know if these will get the facelift Omega's (Omega C) via a straight swap or mods if necessary?

Thanks
