Broadband Usage ......
« on: 30 March 2013, 12:50:23 »

I was looking at my BT Broadband on-line and can see that my average monthly usage is about 49GB per month.

3 of us in the house, I work from home a couple of days a week - but I reckon the largest element is on line TV via the youview box - iPlayer etc, which we do tend to use most days in preference for not bothering to actually record anything.

I was wondering how that compares to other OOFers?

Seems a lot to me but as you say TV and iPlayer soon eats a fair bit, is yours configured as a Public BT WiFi Hotspot?, having said that no idea if that gets added to your usage?

About right, iPlayer in HD can be heavy use. Looking around 2Gb for say Top Gear in HD.

We use the PC a lot but not for TV or video. When I was with BT I used 11GB regualrly every month, annoying as the surcharge kicked in at 10GB hence I move to EE - unlimited.
Only thing I do miss is the free public wifi - brilliant idea, hard to believe BT came up with it.

It will almost certainly be videos and TV that push it up.

Dont think they did, seem to remember something about Westminster Council come up with the idea and BT agreed to trial it there many moons ago.  :-\

It will be the streaming.

BT Wifi/Openzone/Fon does not count towards usage.

Billing Period    Peak usage    Off-Peak usage    Total usage
29 Dec - 28 Jan    5.27GB    9.99GB    15.26GB
29 Jan - 28 Feb    4.36GB    8.69GB    13.06GB
01 Mar - 28 Mar    5.29GB    21.02GB    26.31GB

Looks like I have been behaving myself this year.   ::)   Not like me.   Maybe ought to spend more yime on the video link sites. :D :D

No idea, as I partially load balance, and I can't get the stats for the BT Business Broadband line....  ....as its always been truely unlimited.

Stats for Zen line I do know, but with all the shite hanging off it, isn't a realistic comparison to this discussion...

I think that was the 'Wireless City Project' in 2003.  What BT did though is to open up all their customers routers to other BT customers, creating 1/2 million hotspots in the UK, using the then extra long range routers.   That is the brilliant idea.  No doubt the BT person responsible is still unappreciated and in a lowly paid position. They don't promote it much perhaps because a lot of home users would switch it off if they knew their routers were open but probably because BT don't know what a good idea it was/is.

Tech question (probably for TB)

I have BT Infinity and am a BT Fon member (obviously). I am aware that anyone using my BT Fon does not affect my D/L allowance.

Question is....when I start the computer upstairs, it always comes up with the message 'Connected to BT Fon'.... not my BT Hub...is this my BT Fon as I am nearer to my hub than a neighbours computer????
So basically, it would be better to download with BT Fon, so I increase my downloads with no penalty. Right or wrong ?

TIA
