The Great Danger - Public Apathy
« on: 30 March 2013, 16:31:49 »

There has been some debate on here about the expected influx of Bulgarian and Romanian mass immigration in 2014.

Without getting into any discussion about that just note this e-mail I have received from the Government after putting my name to a petition:

"Subject: HM Government e-petitions: The petition 'Stop mass immigration from Bulgarian and Romanians in 2014, when EU restrictions on immigration are relaxed.' has reached 140,058 signatures

  Dear Miss Elizabeth Freeman,

The e-petition 'Stop mass immigration from Bulgarian and Romanians in 2014, when EU restrictions on immigration are relaxed.' signed by you recently reached 140,058 signatures and a response has been made to it.

This e-petition has passed 100 000 signatures and has been passed to the Backbench Business Committee to consider for debate. The Committee have allocated a debate in Westminster Hall on 22 April 2013 from 16:30 to 19:30. Further information about the debate, and the work of the Backbench Business Committee can be found at www.parliament.uk/bbcom The Home Office have provided the following Government response to the petition: When the coalition government was formed we made a clear promise to the British public that, after thirteen years of uncontrolled mass immigration, this government would reduce and control immigration. Latest statistics show that the tough policy changes we have made are working. Net migration has fallen by almost a third since June 2010 and our visa statistics indicate that this trend is set to continue. Just under a third of the people coming to the United Kingdom are from the EU, while 55% are from outside the EU. About 14% are British citizens returning home. The bulk of our net migration, therefore, is from outside the EU. The right to free movement offers substantial benefits to EU citizens, and these advantages are also enjoyed by a great number of British nationals. Around 1.4 million UK nationals have exercised their free movement rights to live in another EU country. In terms of European immigration, we have made clear that we will always apply transitional controls on new EU member states. In 2011 we extended controls on Bulgarian and Romanian migration until the end of 2013, the latest date allowed by the Accession Treaties, under which these two countries joined the EU. Continuing the controls beyond the end of this year is not possible because of the terms of the Accession Treaties agreed under the previous Government. Eight other EU Member States imposed similar transitional controls which will expire at the same time: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, and Spain. Free movement rights are not unlimited. Any stay beyond the initial three months is limited to those exercising Treaty rights as a worker, student, self-employed or self-sufficient person. Those who are not working or seeking work in the UK are required to have sufficient resources to support themselves and their families to avoid becoming a burden on the social assistance scheme, and are required to have comprehensive medical insurance. The Government is clear that EU citizens who benefit from the right to free movement must adhere to the responsibilities this brings with it and abide by our laws. If an EU national does not meet one of the requirements set out in the Directive then they will not have a right to reside in the UK and may be liable for removal. A cross-government ministerial group is currently reviewing the arrangements for controlling all foreign nationals’ access to benefits and public services.

Note I am one of just 140,058 signatures!!!!

That highlights the real threat to our democracy; the apathy of the British public to issues that really affect our nation.  It is not terrorists, it is not just poor decisions by politicians, and it is not immigration in itself.  It is a lack of passion, commitment, and dedication in making your political views known.  That is why we need strong leaders like Churchill or Thatcher to go all out to truly inspire the people and make our politics matter. The general public have proved useless to do it themselves. It is sobering to think that without those particular strong characters, today we could be speaking German and The Falklands would be The Malvinas!! ::) ::) ::)

Forget the negatives people, just go for positive action to express your opinions! :y :y :y :y

It's a done deal. Has been for yonks. :-\......but look on the bright side, from 2014 you'll be free to move to Bulgaria and Romania. ;)

Oh yes we do Opti.  General Election 2015, and then the pressure continues to build to exit the EU!

The British public have again to have the confidence to know we can bring about change as we have in history.  Once a great uprising takes place, the "elite" in their ivory towers know they have to change.  The time for that is upon us again. But as I say, are the masses really that interested, or just filled with apathy when in the past direct action was taken by them! ::) ::) ;)

I agree, and a right wing element within the Conservative Party is what is now required.  They would certainly now get my vote. :y :y :y

I certainly wouldn't be liked by the time I was finished, but that is the price a good leader may have to pay for bringing a Great country back together :y :y

Yep, I got the same response where I had signed it.

I agree, I suspect they get many more votes on x-factor and other TV tripe.  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

The conclusion I've come to is that we do not have enough active people in our political parties. If we did then the Camorons, Osbournes, Cleggs and Millipedes of this world would not be where they are today. Unfortunately, where we have a bunch of buffoons, who would struggle to run a bath let alone a country. There are a few effective operators in Parliament, but the buffoons keep them in the background so they are not shown up.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

If I wasn't emigrating, then I would get more involved with UKIP and become an activist in their party, but I would not want to be a full time politician.  ???

Lizzie, if you want to know more that is going on with the Conservatives, which you won't see in the papers, I would suggest you read John Redwood's Diaries daily blog: http://johnredwoodsdiary.com/ and subscribe to his daily newsletter.

The only party that I think could save this country from impending economic disaster is UKIP or a UKIP /minor party Conservative coalition and this is purely on the basis that Nigel Farage understands finance where he made his fortune in the City of London and it is quite clear in the interviews where I have seen him talking about financial matters he knows what he is on about and as a proper right wing party I think they would do what is necessary to save the country.

People that depend upon the welfare state, will be the worst hit once the country runs out of money. Benefits, pensions and the NHS and Education budgets are going to have to be cut by 30% and the the Windmill and Overseas Aids departments will need to be scrapped to get rid of the deficit or alternatively byhaving high inflation to do the same. This could all have been avoided if the Conservatives had re-balanced the economy with public spending cuts and tax cuts to get it moving again at the beginning of this Parliament. If after 2015 we have another Liebour or Liebour/LimpDamned coalition, the only good thing will be the party that sowed the seeds of the UK's economic destruction will be there to reap the whirlwind.

Sadly, once this mess is sorted out with Greek, Irish and Portuguese style austerity and hardship. Like these countries with 100+ debt to GDP ratio your children and grandchildren will be paying whatever inflation has not removed back through high taxes.  >:( >:( >:( >:(

A couple of points if I may:

Whilst I heartily welcome the fact that the petition has gained more than requisite amount for a debate, there is frankly nothing that the administration can do about it as it is hide-bound by the EU laws on cross-border migration. Of course, it could unilaterally prevent them from entering, but that would mean taking on the EU and the ECHR and you would never see the Cameroons do that. I may be wrong, but I think the only legal avenue is to leave the EU.

Secondly, I don't believe that the relatively small number of signatories vis-ŕ-vis the population is all down to apathy. The petition is only online and it is also only promoted by small blogs and the like, not the mainstream media. In other words, I think that, among the population at large, the existence of the petition is scarcely known.

Incidentally, UKIP's Facebook "likes" have been mushrooming over the past weeks since Easteigh. Of course, that's no scientific indicator, but is nevertheless worthy of note and suggests rapidly increasing support. :y
