Starter motor
« on: 16 April 2013, 18:21:13 »

Hi all, I have an mv6 and assumed my starter motor failed, I got one today but the mechanic tested my circuits and said it has got 12v going to the starter but when i try and start it there is no power getting to it at all. I have had this problem since i changed the battery. He does not know what the problem is as all visible connections look fine. Any idea's please?

Pretty surely no relation I'm guess, if I were you I'd check the circuit of starter relay such positive as negative pole. Try to give a direct starter impulse coming straightly from the + of battery whether starter is working or not. If ok then you are faceing a failure somewhere in the wiring loom but have a good starter, if not cranking then you got rubbish starter motor. Good luck mate!  :)

You now have a 2nd starter fitted  & the same problem persists. Was the original starter tested ? or just presumed faulty ?

Highly unlikely that it is the starter motor itself IMO. As said before Omega starters are very robust & although failures are possible & have of course happened , To have two different starters fitted with same resulting  failure to even turn over is even more unlikely :o

Hopefully someone on here who knows about the starter circuit & relays etc.  will give   some advice  :-\

Can anyone suggest to Ron  an easy & safe  way to test the starter ?

The original one is still on, i bought one assuming it was starter motor but he says there is power to it with ignition on but when you turn key to start there is nothing. He mentioned circuit is jumping somewhere. I hate electrics, he done a diagnosis test and all is well.

That sounds like a relay problem somewhere to me .. :(

Post 95-96 Omegas do not have a starter relay. Direct feed from ignition switch to starter solenoid if manual, if auto, feed is linked through inhibitor switch under gearlever gaiter.
OP, have you checked the round connectors by battery are all secure and locked in position

Ron,
as this problem started when you replaced the battery , have a real good check of all the electrical  connections in & around & under  the black boxes that are local to the battery .

When you change the battery there is always a fair amount   of pulling etc on the connections in that area .

Seem to remember oof member  TP having a similar problem to this  a while back & it was a connector that had drifted apart in that  battery area .

Sorry i can't link you to it ( useless on a PC)

Everything by battery is fine, we tested all the main fuses etc. Would the inhibiter just fail like that with no warning? All it was was cold weather syndrome, flat battery. It is doing my head in.
