Trip computer MPG...V.....Actual MPG

I've often been dubious about the accuracy of the Omega trip computer, so I decided to run my own test.

It's not 100% accurate, or scientific, but it should come pretty close.

1. Brim Omega until it is physically impossible to add more fuel.

2. Pay at the desk. This is optional for people from Liverpool. ::) ::) ;)

3.Set trip computer to zero.


After 369.6 recorded miles (Lincolnshire to Wales and return) these are the figures from the trip computer.

 Distance....369.6 miles

Fuel used....12.3 gallons

Average consumption.....30.0 MPG

Brimming the tank for a second time gave a slightly different set of figures.


Fuel used....58.55 litres or 12.86 gallons

Average consumption.....28.7 MPG.

So, in summary, the trip computer may not be telling the whole truth, but it's not telling too many porkies either. :y :y :y

Ive always found the MID types to be reasonably accurate when doing a brim to brim in the past, however the NCDC 20XX Ive aways found the mpg readings far too high compared to actual.

On petrol Omegas, I've always found it to be within 0.5mpg. Makes no odds which display type, if the display is making a difference, it has the wrong config ;)

LPG, its going to be out. Which way depends on LPG nozzle size, pressure, multipliers etc.

TDs, generally accurate to within a couple of mpg when unchipped. When chipped, overeads by a significant margin (as expected, if you know how the maps work)

If its your 2.6 MV6 could have either, NCDC20XX will be with Sat Nav, no Sat Nav then it will be the Philips 2006 with MID.

No posh satnav so it must be this one. :y :y

Did 196miles trip distance according to computer and apparently averaged 28.7mpg (used 7.2 gallons total) in the 3.2 on twisty hilly roads no motorways or dual carrageways just country roads pretty much... Pretty good i thought that was, Filled up with Shell V-Power Nitro+ petrol.

Ah I didn't, but still only used £50 odd for 200 miles on those type of roads mentioned, Would resetting the computer give better more accurate results ?

Yes it would as what you are seeing could be an average over several hundreds or thousands of miles :y

28mpg is hard from a 3.2 even on a motorway cruise. Best I ever got was 30mpg between the Welsh end of the grotty M4 and Oxford, mostly at 80mph, except for a few miles of frustration.

Reset it now... Been roughly 80miles in it today there and back from the MOT and average MPG on similar roads 24mpg although that's driving sensible due to the issues i have with the steering under heavy braking... Shell V-power Nitro+ petrol again i'm going to treat it on that stuff for awhile to help clear it out thats if this expensive petrol does anything at all..
