Soft coating...
« on: 10 May 2013, 14:48:48 »

Hi,

Can anyone suggest how to remove the soft rubberised coating on the trim?
Mine is quite scratched up so I want to refresh it....

Carefully remove top layer with a knife blade, then 400 grit wet and dry, gradually using finer grades up to 2000 grit, then paint or polish as required. Takes forever, but worth the time :y

Doesn't work on switches though as you lose the pictures :'(

Yup :y

Remove door card, use a Dremel to remove the heads off the plastic rivets and they just pull off :y

Need to remove armrest part as well.

Lots and lots of 1/2" size 6 screws with suitable washers to refit :y

Not a weekend job to do properly though :-\

 :y

I knew I had seen it somewhere but couldn't find it again, so cheers for the link  :y
I have the cream interior though, so not sure about colour, etc. Need to think about that, but the black looks really smart.

Tamiya do a couple of hundred colours, so doubt you'll have a problem finding a suitable shade :y mine have done nearly 6k and are still unmarked 8) The original coating used to collect a scrape a week :'(

I haven't tried it, but Polycarbonate paints might work on the body of the door cards/centre armrest etc. They're used for painting the shells of remote control cars and are durable and flexible :y I really do not know if they're suitable though :-\

Al, I've just realised that your door cards are only partly cream. Is this the way they came? Or is this as a result of your refurb?

Re read the link ::) basically any combination of door card, door pocket, trim strip and armrest padding can be used.

Sorry, I'm just curious. My door cards are totally cream, except for the very top, the walnut strip obviously, and the (grey) carpeted portion of the lower storage. I don't think I've seen one with just the single portion of cream  ???

If this is a wind up, then apologies for biting...

Had you actually read the link I posted >:( then you would know that I had removed and coated those panels with Alcantara...

You can take any facelift door card, dismantle it and rebuild it in the exact combination that you desire. Simples. :-X

Because of speaker static, they change the light colored section around speaker to grey.

They look very smart, love that on my 2.2, but can't be bothered as its a lot of effort  ;D
