The crazy thing is that Direct Line and Churchill are basically the same company ( different trading names of UK insurance Ltd )

The guy I work with phoned up Admiral insurance, then Bell and then Elephant. He was asked by Elephant what his best quote was, so he gave her a ridiculously low price and said it was quoted by Bell. The woman laughed and said 'nice try sir, but I should explain that both Bell and Elephant are part of the Admiral Group, so I'm well aware of what sir has been quoted'.  ;D ;D

Same group maybe but if they are sharing your info which each other without your permission you have them by the dangle berries.  The ICO would love to hear about this if true ::)

Don't know the legalities of it myself but a quick look at my own insurance website tells me that they share information.  :-\
Happy to be corrected though.  :y

Extract below:

"It is important for the industry to share information on customers' applications, claims and losses for vehicle insurance, to ensure customers are covered for valid claims and to help the industry keep premiums down for consumers. Providers often use this information when considering applications for new Vehicle Insurance policies. Our process for recording customer information is in line with industry best practice."

Update - had a phone call today from Direct Line following their receipt of my letter confirming my verbal cancellation of policy renewal, and my advice that their customer loyalty guy (named in the letter) should be retrained to deal politely and sensibly with customers.  Upshot was that they agreed with my comments as they had listened to the tape of the conversation, and they confirmed that they did have my SP30 on their system, and that I had notified them in January 2012.  All errors theirs!!  Bit late as my new policy came into effect noon today.

They seemed a bit miffed when I advised I will also not be renewing the policy on the Omega when that comes up for renewal in a couple of months time.

Apparently I will be receiving a letter from them detailing the actions they have taken with respect to the guy I spoke to initially - if they don't retrain him, I hope they give him directions to the nearest Job Centre ::)

Sounds like a result, only other thing you need now is a big fat discount to be used again in the future!  :y

Nah - they can get stuffed (certainly for the time being ;) )  Doubt the fat discount offer somehow.

Update - had a letter from DLine advising that the guy in question now no longer works for them.

Today cancelled renewal with Dline on swmbo's omega - reasons given cheaper insurance elsewhere (saving @ £100 pa for same level of cover) and previous issue with Dline on my renewal.
