I'd try Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30 http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Oils/Mobil_1_High_Mileage_5W-30.aspx or Mobil 1 Extended Life™ 10W-60 http://www.mobil1.co.uk/synthetic-engine-oils/extended-life-10w-60.aspx  You might need a bank loan though :).

You need to read the original post.  The OP is inquiring about an alternative to the 'OOF recommendation', whatever that means.

my reason for the question is on start up i get a puff of smoke from exhaust (possible valve stem seals)as its a 2.6 v6 and was wondering if 20/50w oil being a bit thicker in viscocity would help with this :-\,but do understand all the comments on the lifter side of it :y
don't really fancy taking the heads off if you know what i mean,i seem to use about 1/2 ltr of oil a month at the moment and engine has  109,000 miles on it.

How many miles are you travelling per month? ???
1000 a month on average lizzie :y

Thats not bad for 1/2 liter use to be honest, could be a lot worse!

I agree! :y :y
Sorry to hijack your thread Noel.My 3ltr eleit uses 1/2 liter a month, average 1250 miles per month. Is this good or bad,140,000 miles on the clock no visable oil leaks or smells. :-\

I think Vauxhall Warranty says something about 1ltr/1000miles is not excessive (on new vehicles), so anything less than that on an older Omega would surely be quite good IMO.

Unsure how much my 203k 3.0l uses, as most of the 1/2l it gets through in 2k, most of it is clearly visible on top of the sump pan  :-[

[/quote Judging by all the replies i think its normal usage, but i run a 2.6 and prone to piss poor valve stem seals. which is what im putting my oil usage down to, as i also have no obvious leaks :y

You need to read the original post.  The OP is inquiring about an alternative to the 'OOF recommendation', whatever that means.

So do you thats not what he said - just to remind you op was asking if 20/50W was a sensible alternative as he was concerned about oil usage on a higher mileage engine - was advised usage within GM tolerances and similar to other members usages - so OOF recommended oil ok.

He was not asking re expensive potential Mobil alternatives which you probably have no practical experience of using (Google rules OK!!) ::)

Original post below to remind you

Is there any advantage or disadvantage  :-\ to using 20/50w 0il as opposed to 10/40w in a higher mileage v6 petrol engine. ;)

VW consider that 1ltr/1000 Kilometers to be normal :o

My 3.2 with 246k uses just over a litre every 10k, although as TB says, most of it appears to be outside the engine ::)

Usual abuse from dbug.  Why do you bother to do that?

No I don't have experience of that particular Mobil oil (nor do you) but I would try it if my car was that mileage and burning oil.  That's what it is recommend for (by Mobil, not Google).

OP was asking about using an oil other than 10/40, read it yourself in his post, yet you recommended 10/40.  Doh!

Acceptable oil consumption is 0.97l /1000 miles 2.2, 2.6, 3.2 petrol and that's official (as in Vauxhall's figures not some 'OOF recomendation').
