« on: 25 June 2013, 14:00:40 »

Just brought an 06 2.2 zafira b :-\
At idle it has a rattle from chain area.  Goes near enough when you Rev slightly.
Anyone with alot of Vauxhall experience?
Thanks

Taken it to a general garage who seem to think it's normal.

I would say it's definitley worth checking the chain guides for wear.

No idea about diesels but father has the 2.2 petrol in his Astra cabrio and that started the timing chain rattling and his is supposed to be the newer one that the oil ways don't block up on.

Two new chains and tensioners and gaskets etc. later and back to being a lovely engine.

How much did that little lot cost to do?

Trouble is I don't know what a noisy chain sounds like :-\
This rattle is like a broken exhaust bracket, a tinny type rattle.

In the main you will always hear a little bit but it does sound like you need the guides replacing.

No idea about the cost though, sorry can't help there.

Had a Mk1 Carlton once on tickover it rattled like a can of marbles, but when revved noise went as the "whip" of the chain "straightened" it.It never let me down though even though it also used to blow oil out of the air filter!!!

Modified oil feed or not, shit servicing will result in wear and noise on any chain driven cam engine......ask a BMW 2.0 diesel owner.....

Agreed Mark. It does have full history tho, serviced every 10k :-\
I don't know for certain it is the chain but can't find an obvious cause of the rattle which sounds a bit like a loose heat shield.

Sorry for late reply. I didit myself, not s bad as you think. If you can do a V6 cambelt you can do a 2.2 chain. I think all in it prob cost around £200 with gaskets fluids etc.

If you want to have a go I have the official video of how to do it here. I will have to dig it out of a drawer. PM your address if you want a copy and I will pop it in the post.

Any experts near by that could listen to ascertain weather or not it's the chain?

Have a look on this site http://www.astraownersclub.com/vb/forum.php if your not already a member. They have a Zaffy section as well. There are some very knowledgeable people on there. There are also a lot of boy racers so you have to weed out the good posters. That looks bad when I write it out, what I mean to say is they have different requirements from me, sorry if it sounded bad.

I got the video I am posting you off a very decent chap on there  :y Many thanks go to Ffoeg for supplying the video

Thought Carltons had a timing belt - one of the loan ones I had whilst mine was in for service ( a 2.0i with 5K miles on clock) certainly did - as the belt broke one morning on starting it up!!  Seem to remember that the LCs had a timing chain though ???
