Weve used green flag in the past - were ok, towed her home further than the 5 miles her policy allowed :y
The last 5-6 years weve just had basic cover 'free' with the current account, at £8 a month for both of us along with a large range of other things like phone insurance.

Needed them out (RAC currently, but was AA in the past)  They were told we were on the A55 - 2 lane very fast dual carriage way, with kids and a blue badge holder in the car.  Took about 30 mins from memory, arrived, changed the wheel and sent us on our way.

I know Im not paying for a premium service, but suits our needs, and should I never need to pay extra for anything like a longer tow, then Ive already saved the money in premiums :y

I'm with ADAC, German version of the AA. For £70 you get full Europe wide breakdown cover + AA cover in the UK.

Essential if you do any road trips, as RAC/AA usually want £60 just for one week, thats if they cover the Omega at-all due its age.

The Recovery option will they say if your 100 odd miles away from home deliver the car to my doorstep all inclusive of the £79.99  a year or £8.25 DD monthly payment deal or are there hidden costs...

And the roadside assistance are there hidden costs there ( i bet there is ) but i have no experience with them  :-\ Say if the crank sensor or something was diagnosed the problem what would happen then...

Can anyone shed some light on this with any of the major companies i.e AA, GF, RAC etc..  :y

TBH i dont use any of them....

My local garage will send out out a recovery truck for £2/mile (thats the rate while your on the back of it)......so realistically its £1/mile including his 'dead' miles......good rate if im local.......buggar if im miles away.......buts that the gamble i take.....plus he also gets to fix the car.....and he's usually faster in getting there than the AA or RAC /etc

What I'd like to know is if I was ever to breakdown for a engine problem or similar it's unlikely they'd be able to fix at the roadside.. Now would they try and ship the car off to a garage to get fixed and give me a big bill or take the car wherever I want "Home" for example or is that the other way round take me and who ever may be with me to a location of my choice and the car gets taken away to a garage  :-\ .. I can't see them getting as big as they have for £79 a year for one person. Hope I'm wrong mind but I can't the the tought out my mind that there are hidden costs if things do go belly up  :( .. Hopefully I'm just being paranoid as per usual.

Thanks for the help thus far chaps, helps one open their eyes  :y

Have been with AA for many, many years now.Have had to call them out 3 times twice they've brought me home without even taking a look at fixing the problem, the other time was when the alternator stopped charging, they had the necessary bit to get it working again so fixed it there and then, this incurred no extra charge. However that was a good few years ago so charging of parts[assuming they have them on the van]may very well be different now.

Same here, Just that when traveling hundreds of miles that wouldn't be a viable option. Then again one could argue you shouldn't be doing those type of miles if you think a car is going to breakdown ..

Personally I'm just after something for peace of mind that's not going to bite me in the ass if anything does go wrong and end up with big bills to whoever I join.. Ideally I just want a company like AA, RAC, GF, Etc.. To pick the car up if it did breakdown and take it home so I can fix it if there is such a option.  :)

Last time I used AA for recovery I had the option of onward journey to destination or return to home,so I had it brought home so I could fix it.

That's my fear..   :'(  ;D , Obviously if the repair job didn't cost the earth it would be a blessing... Does anyone on here work for any of these type of recovery/roadside companies that could shed more light on how they work ?

That's good  :y , Onward travel Would be handy if you had to get where you're going, But I wonder if you did take the onward offer would they still take the car home  ???

I'm with Rac never really had a bad experience with them, they would rather tow the car than fix the problem though.one time when my drive belt pulley came off all it needed were 4 bolts to put it back on but he said he would recover it cause it would be quicker than fixing it I think he was just being lazy :(

Also give them a call say gf will do it cheaper for the same level they should look after you on price :y

They'd have to remove the prop shaft on a RWD Automatic surely  ???

As far as I'm aware if you take the onward option then it's down to you to get it fixed for the return home. They'll not take you where you want to go and then come back and take you home[if that's what you mean?]Also I think if you breakdown[because of crank sensor say]and they fix it you have to allow a certain length of time to elapse before you can call them out to the same fault on the same vehicle.

Something like that... Say you broke down somewhere and they check the car "sorry we can't fix it at the roadside" do they then take your car home with yourself then get the onward travel car delivered to your home so you can carry on with your journey or does it work like this they bring the onward travel car to the breakdown location and the RAC van or whoever your with takes you're car home while you carry on with you're journey with the car they've provided you with  ?
