I might know of a Volvo 18t rigid coming up for sale in the not too distant future... I might also know some one who can drive it ::)
There's quite a few of us actually ;)

Sounds like the best solution would be a mobile workshop like my kit car group use for tour support. Mercedes 814 with a ramp inside able to hold a vehicle on the top "deck", so you can work underneath it. Fitted out with electrics, a workbench and tool cabinets, generator, compressor, etc. and a large side awning for extra fettling space.

anyone?

Yeah ... me ... actually ...  :o

I've been given first shout on this:

... when it becomes available just after Newent ... as it just so happens! ;)

And it has the added bonuses of being sleeper-cabbed with the 6-cylinder lump, as opposed to the later 4-cylinder 'EcoPower' DBW motor. :y

Oh yes, I knew there was something I'd forgotten.  :-[

Can that second level be made into a lift?

Not without some major surgery :-\ but nothing to say the rear panel can't be replaced with a deep tail lift :y

Ah, and cut the middle out, ramp style? :)

...although a post type lift is better for suspension work, but then again that doesn't stop wim, with there axle jack that rolls along to lift the wheels. :y

Correction, to lift the car up to clear the wheels. :)

looking at the trailer and chris's comment about lift, I used to work for a livestock haulier who used parkhouse bodies on the trucks, the upper deck was lifted by cables attached to a hydraulic ram, so my thought is why with all the various engineering skills that we have on here could it not be possible to convert such a thing !!

Now people are building them properly it's a rarity, even on the 8-9K RPM examples that are tuned silly.

What you want is one like this: http://bookatrack.com/-PG?atoner&2181&17676&640&.jpg

Deep tail lift, cars go on the upper deck, workshop below, built in generator.. heck it even has a kitchen sink (no, really!)..

Although come to think of it, you couldn't really work on the cars on the upper deck. D'oh.

As it stands, that trailer has two centreline pillars which pass through the top deck and support the roof. The top deck is welded to those supports, creating a rigid structure. There are ways of getting a car onto the top deck, but as Aaron has observed you could never work on it up there ::)

There are different types of double deck trailers which have a floating floor, but they have limitations to the weight of the top deck and also restricted width due to the lift mechanism :-\

The taillift that Aaron linked to is the kind of thing I had in mind, with the central third removed, allowing easy and height adjustable access to the chassis :y

All food for thought though :y
