You should know better than to use "economic sense " and "Mrs" in the same sentence. ;D

What is heating oil? Kerosene/paraffin?

Could you run an old diesel like my Merc or Albs new aquisition on it? ???  :)

No, it would go bang fairly quickly! Heating oil is thinner and cheaper than 'red' diesel, which as others have pointed out is the same as ordinary diesel just with a dye in it.  :y

Heating oil comes in different grades. 20 sec,30sec.
older style diesal cars with mechanical pumps, will run on heating oil, kerosene, and chip oil.

its just these new fankled DI and hp pumps that don't like the above mixtures, and as for some of that new bio-diesal,the problems that's causing, blogged filters, and pumps slime growth in bulk tanks.

Think i just stick to me old petrol, loot better for the environment, dosnt chuck out all them nasty black soot, that is bad for us. :)

Heating oil can actually be a variety of fuels, as boilers aren't that fussy, so whatever the refinery has a glut of, be it kerosene that doesn't meet the standards to be sold as aviation fuel, paraffin, diesel, etc. it gets blended to roughly the right viscosity and to stay liquid at ambient temperature for the season and bob's your uncle. I don't doubt that a diesel engine would burn it quite happily but, as with all fuel not sold with road duty paid, it's dyed red, so you're in trouble if you get caught using it on the road.

Thanks guys! Those were the answers I was looking for.  ::)

ie Yes it would probably be OK in an older style diesel, but like red diesel has the dye in it so is a no no!  :(

I'll stick to veggie oil then!!  :)

I am currently looking at waste oil burners for use at the heritage centre where we currently have a few thousand litres of waste oil to get rid of.

The regs are 'challenging' for this though although its a surprisingly clean heat source

Used engine oil, so a Part B permit required to use.

I have a Thermobile oil burning heater in my workshop, don't need a permit as mine has output below a certain threshold and I only burn my own oil,had to check with EA as my workshop is on a landfill site perimeter
good heater though, toasty here in winter :y :y

Well keep quiet or have it hidden as even a SWOB (Small Waste Oil Burner - sub 3MW) requires an environmental permit from your local authority (its an offence to burn oil without one).

So legaly you do need a permit
