And the lamps blew one after the other rather than simultaneously?

The original ones did yes. One was blown for ages. Then when the second one went, I bought these new Eco halogen bulbs as B+Q or Focus didn't have anything else. Neither of the new ones work now.

I'd start by checking the new lamps for continuity, it's unlikely that you have 2 defective lamps straight out of the box but not impossible.

If the continuity check reads good, then the next step is to check that you have 230v at the actual lampholders.
Be very careful with the meter probes when doing this as it is quite easy to inadvertently short the terminals which will result in a loud bang accompanied with a flash of blinding light which will probably scare the crap out of you if you aren't used to things going bang.

Also keep your pinkies well away from the meter probes when testing the lampholders as you have no RCD protection and it is quite easy to kill yourself if you take your eye off the ball.

I shouldn't have said that actually. Those are the bulbs I have now. I don't know of they work or not, yet. It might be the hood at fault. :y

Yes I was a bit concerned. The lamp holders are a shit to get at.

Plus there the risk of dropping something on the glass topped hob. I'll need to cover that up first.

One for tomorrow.

I presume the Eco halogens are supposed to be a direct swap for the old style ones.

Hmmm. Not likely to be the bulbs then. :( iirc I read they have a starter within, so to speak. So would they give a normal reading from a meter?

When pressing the lights button, there is a click. Like a relay switching. It still clicks.
