Beware as the 5th gear report is referring to octane boosters and if they actually give any more power,

What Tony is reffering to is a one shot injector cleaner like Forte Gas.....and this does seem to work pretty well.

I tend to chuck forte gas treatment through the fleet every 6 months.
Does seem a little more responsive afterwards, also possibly slightly more economical.

Whether it is worth the money, not sure, but  I do use it as part of my servicing routine.

It does work - I use it on every tank of petrol.

Keeps the injectors clean - this is an issue with LPG

This is probably more of an issue.

Engines simply don't get excessive carbon build-up internally these days because the mixture is always spot-on and they don't burn oil. Also the combustion chambers run so hot that no more than a minimal thickhess of deposit will ever build up. Petrol is clean, with no added lead and the like so it's a non-issue.

You can get issues with the injectors when they run for a while then dry out because the fuel can leave deposits as they dry in a hot engine. Having said that, I've taken injectors from wrecks in scrap yards and never had one that didn't have a reasonably good spray pattern when tested.

All other parts of the fuel system run wet even on LPG so they don't have an opportunity to get dirty.

I use STP a couple of times a year and swear by it (silver bottle - it's a more complete treatment).

As for carbon deposits and whether they do indeed build up on more modern engines (and bear in mind Omega engines aren't cutting edge nowadays), I'd say they definately do.  Bought my Omega from a self-employed middle-aged lady who used it for her work and only pootled along in the middle lane she reckoned.  First time I took it to over a ton on the m/way happened to have a mate in the car behind, he reckoned it left a hell of a cloud of black smoke behind, as much of the deposits got cleared out.  Occasional (ahem) enthusiastic driving and STP ensures no such clouds ever seen again.

newbie to LPG question then .....

Mine is running on petrol for less than a mile every start ... would it be beneficial to give it a blast on petrol every so often ??

If so, how often and for how long ???

TIA  :)

Use a super petrol or redex and they tend to be OK

Do try 2 stroke oil, it has all the qualities of Redex, (thin, mixes well, high in detergents) without the cost. 10Ml per litre, (maybe weaker) & you're away.
This was the subject of a question to the motoring section of the Daily Telegraph some time ago and was recommended. :y

Hi everyone, :) simple short question Redex or similar, opinions please ,Ta  :y

Is that stuff still around Tony?!

Last time I tried that was in 1971 with a 1960 Austin A40 to try and boost the power by cleaning, and keeping clean, the engine!  Fat chance in that old crates 800cc engine!  ;D ;D

Like others I wouldn't have dreamed of putting it into a modern injection fueled engine. ;)   I have always though a bit of nitro fuel would do the trick; never tried it though! ;D ;D

Only ever used the stuff once - on a Golf. Took spark plugs out, put an egg cupful of REDEX in each cylinder as I had read somewhere. Left it to fester for a while. Turned it over without the spark plugs. then refitted plugs cranked up. What the F... Great clouds of steel grey blue smoke filled the terraced street. Neighbours came out so I cleared off out into the countryside convinced a piston ring had gone. Half an hour later the smoke had gone. :o

I was one relieved bunny that it was all OK. Still have the bottle 3/4 full, haven't used it since and probably won't! :y

We used to call that a "redex decoke" ... was a damned good way of cleaning the sh$t out of an engine ..... but best done in a layby some where in the country .... not at home when your Mum has just put the washing out ..... that got me into BIG trouble ...  :)

The same effect can be achieved by use of old brake fluid.....   ;)
