So, what's better the iOS? .....Andyroid? :)

I'm not sure which (if any) is the better OS, but 90% of the issues you have listed above are not a problem I have ever encountered on any Android powered handset.

Sorry that should say "what's better THAN iOS." at the end of my previous post. Whoops.

So that last 10%, what specifically is the problem there with Android? :)

There's no real answer, It's all down to personal preference or what you can afford even, It's a bit like Choosing between the Omega vs the Scorpio or even Ford vs Vauxhall.  :-X ;D

You viable options, as IOS doesn't work for you, are Windows Phone 8 (avoid 7, its a bit of a 0.5 release) or Android. If going for Android, the Galaxys seem to be the most stable (out of the box), a lot of the HTC/Huawei/ZTE made cheapies seem to have poor/unstable implementations. S4s are pretty cheap now, as no bugger wants them. I believe the S5 launch is probably being brought forward due to poor sales of the S4.

If you can, find somebody with one, and try it as much as you can. I doubt you'll find a device that does everything perfectly, so its finding what compromises antagonise you the least. I'm lucky, the nature of where I work means I have colleagues with all these devices, so I get to play :)

And understand multitasking, else you'll get false info :), the phone app multitasks fine, its just a crap app (in IOS up to IOS6, I wasn't daft enough to upgrade to IOS7). I can't imagine crApple allowing a 3rd party phone app in their store.

As an aside, try to avoid Java on any device, its unlike Oracle will ever be able to secure it in its current form. Probably the nearest solution will be to sign all applets, immediately reducing its usefulness. Java (and Flash) is a fantastic way of getting in to devices, even moreso if the security layers are removed (jailbreak/rooting).

Is it possible to avoid Java on Android? Android may be built on the Linux kernel but it seems to use Java for all the applications (but that might be a misunderstanding on my part :-\

Its doesn't multi task fine ::) its a bunch of small apps thrown together hap hazaddly, hold on... I was going to mention it won't download data while on a call as I had the other day, but it does. Or it does on 3G, it was on GPRS when I had a problem. "Data not available while on a call" flashed up, or similar. ...iirc.

You keep saying that. I have yet to see any real report of poor sales. And the cheapest you can buy a UK S4 is still £400+. So not really cheap as you say? If you could find me a cheap one for say less than £300 and not from Hong Kong, then I would be eternally grateful.

*sigh*, you need to understand what multitasking is, else you will end up with another dog. Apps which are set to multitask multitask fine. Others are set to pause when not having the focus. Its the sensible option when running on limited resources, in order to save precious cpu cycles and even more precious battery.

I'm pretty certain that you cannot have a call and data simultaneously on 2G (not sure about EDGE or 3G technologies). Obviously, as 4G cannot carry voice calls, 4G data and 2/3G calls can coexist. If I'm correct, thats a restriction of the standards, not device specific.

Anyway, I know you are trying to goad me, so I'm off to find a brick wall, to give myself an even bigger headache.

A colleague of mine was looking 2 or 3 months ago (for one of his kids), and contract free, unlocked, it was easy enough to pick one up for £350, I think even Amazon (not marketplace) had them well below £400. I know he got one - bloody enourmous thing, but think he went down the contract route in the end, as he got the phone free (I think) on a £20pm/2yr contract.

A premium/flagship phone is around the £500+ mark, it was always supposed to sell (retail) for approximately the price of an iPhone. In fact, from memory, I think the cheapest S4 had a RRP of £600 at launch, £70 more than the equivilent iPhone. So £350, or even £400, counts as cheap.

Back in the autumn, the retail channel press was full of stories about the S5 being launched very early in the new year (Jan/Feb) due to poor sales, and advising the channel not to commit to too many S4s for fear of being stuck with old stock. If prices have increased, that may be why.

Not looked recently (Android doesn't meet my needs), but would expect prices to be high at xmas, and for the next couple of weeks following.

As always, if buying mobiles, avoid ebay, Amazon Marketplace sellers, Play etc.

Now you've gone all gay ;D I'm not trying to goad you at all, I just won't be goaded. ;)

Its a pc in your pocket right? Would you accept the above from a pc? No you wouldn't. But there is the challenge for manufacturers IMO, and in some areas crApple fall flat on their arse. But, they have stability. Nokia never seemed to learn that without stability they had nothing.

I strongly suspect the only way to find out if another device or os fixes all these things is to own it.

Although noting specifically what bugs us, would help. ....then looking for an improvement on those is a way forward, no?

Android has caught up massively in last few releases, both in software and hardware. I think the 2013 Nexus 7 is a cracking tablet, the iPad Mini Retina is a better product though. Slicker and sleeker hardware, but it's the cost is the problem.

I've also seen some secret new Samsung Tablets due out soon, very impressive. Think they got the pricing right, should shake the market up a little. :)
