I will wash it again with my normal detergent, once I bought some tennis balls. If the smell doesn't go away then will try some Borax. Is it suitable for delicates? Seems like a heavy duty product. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intralabs-Borax-Powder-Decahydrate-1Kg/dp/B003DU5NTW

Drying it in an airing cupboard is a good idea but still leaves the down in lumps

I believe her exact words were "Yes of course you can!", then she googled to be sure and confirmed it ;)

I did ask how much to use and her answer was "I'd just eyeball it" .. So that probably doesn't help much!

Down is a sod too wash without ruining it.

The smell will be a result of the chemicals use to sterilise the down at point of manufacture-it will lessen with time.

Washing normally will damage the down and stop it lofting correctly. Detergents and fabric soft enters will cling to the down and feather and stop lofting, meaning insulation. Clumping will do the same.

Wash again, use detergent but no fabric softener. Put through on a few extra rinse cycles.

Then tumble dry with several tennis balls till fully dry and the coat puffs up fully. A moderate heat for longer time is better than high heat for short time. Don't air or line dry. Radiators will also be of no use if you want to maintain the coat.

A pure soap detergent is best, but as unlikely to be had, normal with extra rinses is the next best thing.

The quicker it drys the less it's likely to smell, but once dry air for a few days and it will go. Don't be tempted to use chemicals to mask the smell it likely damage the down and ruin the coat

Good advice there.

I have a delicate detergent for wool which I will use and did previously read about putting it through another wash without detergent to fully rid of any soap residue. I will buy three tennis balls tomorrow and take it down the laundrette again for drying. It was recommended to put down jackets through short cycles of low heat as it cools even further towards the end of each cycle. Hopefully it won't stink this time

Well 5 hours drying time and £15.50 later my coat is back and in better shape than ever. Doesn't smell like a tramp has been living in it either
