Easy start - diesel engine?
« on: 11 February 2014, 20:04:32 »

Is it OK to use easy start on my 2.2dti? If so, where do I spray it?
The car is outside my home, it has been running lovely for weeks now, no problems.
The fuel warning light is on & I knew I was low on fuel - I planned to fill up in the morning.
I've drained the battery trying to start her - the battery is now off being charged & I will try again when it's ready.
I've been down the garage & put 5 litres in with the can. Any advice please?  :-[

No .. NO .. NO

under no circumstances EVER use that unadulterated crap. All you will do is wreck the engine .. perhaps not the first time .. but over time it will kill it.  Dead. Finito. Terminally.

You might need to bleed the fuel through :y

OK....I've got that message - no easy start!! :y
The battery is now going back on & I will try again.
If no joy, what's involved to bleed the fuel through?

Persistence and a lot of cranking.

I've used Easy Start before, just don't go mad with it...

;D ;D ;D.....UPDATE....... yes, she started thank you, thank you. Without the easy start.
It took an awful lot of turning over & I thought briefly that I may flatten the battery again.

Can someone please explain to me why I shouldn't use the easy start though, because I don't understand why not? What damage would it do?  ::)

If memory serves it used to make cars very hard to start without it if you used it all the time

Just in case you were going to use it    DON'T ;D

Easy Start is so volatile that it ignites well before each piston reaches top dead centre - so it's burning, forcing the piston down, while the piston is being driven upwards by the crankshaft. Something has to give. Normally you'll end up with bent rods.

If its' own fuel system isn't causing it to start, that needs fixing. Easy start doesn't prove anything.

I'm sure Mr DTM will be along in the morning to explain the evils of using ether/easy start, if you are lucky he will just post pictures of a damaged piston and bent conrod but I would be putting a phone book down the trousers in case he is in a bad mood.

Nothing wrong with the accurately metered ether delivery systems fitted to some commercial and construction vehicles to aid cold starting, its the hand-held spray cans that do the damage.

There is an alternative WD40 or carb cleaner up air intake (I use WD40).
Then turn the ignition off and on about 12-20 times(for about 5 seconds each time) this will activate the fuel pump in the tank and fill the fuel filter & fuel lines and saves burning out the starter.
Another point 5 litres of fuel is not enough put 20 litres in.
