Head gasket done and running, BUT!!!
« on: 15 February 2014, 05:42:07 »

Right as you very helpful guys know already I was changing my head gasket on my 2.2 CD petrol omega (2003). I have only just sat down to type this as I have just got her running again ... sort of  ???

The car fired up without hesitation but it fast became obvious that there are other problems than just the head gasket failure!
She will idle but very erratically hunting between 400 and 900 rpm. If you press the accelerator gently she cuts out and dies.
I took her for a short run (to the end of the street and back) and the engine is unresponsive and the power lurches on and off, unless you floor it and then she takes off up to 4000 rpm then the power cuts  >:(   The whole time she won't change out of 1st gear (limp mode maybe?). Occasionally as the car is moving the engine stalls also which is kinda annoying being an automatic and all!
Now I'm thinking it's either the coil pack (as the rubber tubes all look bad) or the camshaft position sensor has failed (but it's not hesitant to start) or a combination of the two ... I will add that the contaminated oil hasn't been changed out yet (this is to be done when I fix all the other troubles) but the car isn't been used yet and it is on the list ... don't slap me I know the oil thing is a bad thing but I'm just testing it all out before I go any further. Oh and the engine will rev up as far as 4k and then the power immediately cuts again  ??? ??? ???

Any advice is welcomed as I'm really stuck on this one and I don't have access to a code reader + the car is not road legal (yet), I can't say how the engine behaved before I changed the HG as it as blown when we got her and extremely down on power.

Thanks a Ton for all the help so far Graham  :y :y :y :y

Could be in for a world of hurt and money changing parts without diagnosis.
Its rare, but the pedal trick MAY reveal codes, certainly worth a try.
If not, Id be looking to invest in, or ask for help getting any codes.

Id also be rechecking any and all connectors are reconnected as a first point of call, but guess youve already done this, a fresh look on a fresh day may just help.

I just tried the pedal trick ... doesn't work on this car  >:( (that is unless I'm doing it wrong  :D
Just got her running at (a very rough) idle, does seem to be getting slightly better the longer she's running ... maybe it's the fact that the oil has a fair bit of water in it  :D if I can get all that to burn off it might fix the problem before I charge in with another £600 of parts ... as I can hear it in the background from my living room that makes life a little easier. She can run till there's no fuel left for me but I have noticed that when you first start up she runs beautiful for all of 2 seconds regardless of throttle position  ???

We will see what another day of tinkering brings up as I suppose that there could be a loose / disconnected wire somewhere that has been missed  :D  I will throw cash at this car all day long as they are wonderful things to drive on a daily basis especially when you have bad back issues

Well guys ... IT LIVES !!!!!! (queue lightning and Frankenstein type scene)  ;D ;D ;D

She was still running really pooh and after lots of digging and stumbling upon this .... http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=121543.0
I thought to myself "unplug the MAF and see what happens", sure enough she fired straight up and runs really well. No smoke, no drama just idles a little high ... as soon as you plug the MAF back in she starts to misfire and erratically idle (guess that's dead then?).
Idle see's the instant consumption at 0.4 gal/h and a touch high on idle speed compared to my dads 2.2 petrol (his idles at 5 - 600 rpm and mine at around 700 rpm)

So once again the forum has saved my bacon and the only question I have left is ... Where the hell do I get a MAF from???

Nice one getting sorted  :y
I think genuine only for the MAF, so your local dealer  :y

Didn't you change the oil and filter as part of the HG change :o
If you really do love this car then change it NOW before you do any real damage! :y

Yup, dont waste money on a pattern.  If it works out of the box it won't for long.

Maf now changed and that sorted the running problem out fine, took it from a Zafira in the scrap yard as they use the same exact part (very useful) I checked the numbers on them both the unit is a
SIEMENS 5WK9 606
90 530 463>PBT-GF30
barcode reads 58491126

£15 was a bargain and any problems he will change it for another one !
Don't panic all, the oil IS getting changed next week and the car is stood until I do that change now so no damage is getting done I promise lol !

The EML has stayed on though after the maf change so I think I need to get the ecu reset and cleared (after I note the codes it's stored), a local guy does this for £15 all in which is good.
:y :y :y all looking really good so far, I'm really happy I did it myself and it runs beautiful with the new maf installed  :y :y :y

I read in a maintenance guide that the EML can stay on, then go off after a few days
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=106562.0 think this is the link  :y

PS Did someone mention the oil  ;D

Back = ruined   ::), Worth it though (also dad's back ruined lmao)

EML light is now off, did this all on it's own when I put her in the garage after a good celebratory wash and wax  :D
Just a very few minor jobs left to do then I'm back on the road  :y
