I can recommend a Ford, yes I said a Ford after the sad demise of my CDX  the search begun for something cheaper to run/insure and tax.
I found a 22 thou miler, one owner,2006 mondeo Ghia estate tdci, had it 6 months now and I love it,only problem is it's bigger than the omega, and it's a very tight fit in the garage.

BMW. 5 series.  :y
e39 with 3.0 diesel

translate from German site
1,187 million miles BMW E39 : unplanned usefulness
Today we have an entry from the well loved category " until the wheels fall off ." On the German forum BMW owners Cuba came across a very interesting topic and decided to share the most interesting fragments , translating them into a language we understand , not sounding like a series of machine gun :
Here Mr. Bernd Böhme , who with his BMW driven 1 187 000 km

here some work done on car:
Despite this, the durability of some components was surprising . Some of the exchange :
- 168000 km - replacement turbine (second lasted till the end )
- 655000 km - replacement of the fuel pump
- 804000 km - replacement of the automatic transmission
- Brakes durable than 404000 km to 740000 km (front) and 905000 km (rear)
- 458000 km , 934000 km - replacement alternator
On passing a million miles you Bernd need 7 years and 8 months. Certainly auto jeździłoby on, unfortunately , coming back from Spain, the course of 1 187 000 km on the icy road Mr. Bernd crashed his BMW . This is wrong , who believes that the end of the life of 9 -year-old the car. Polish businessmen - Joseph

pay about 1500, then about 1200 for LPG

Get one with an ageless number plate, and you can convince yourself it's only 2 yrs old  :y

How are you getting on with yours?

Great! Nothing fell off yet, though even my 15 yr old Omega had less rattles ..... but that might be because I've always been used to driving 3 box saloons.

It's thirsty though & a years road tax brings a tear to the debit card  ;D ;D ;D

Do you think it is a realistic proposition for home maintenance?

I have to admit that all I've done is a couple of oil changes & changed the air filter (which are bastids to get in/out) and paid someone else to do an ATF for me ...... all that MB could say about whether it had been done was - Well it should have been  ??? The local indie reckoned that the colour of what was in suggested that it hadn't  ???

The Omega has plenty of things that are unnecessarily awkward to access but we have learned how to work around them.
Have MB purposely made it difficult to maintain the car do you think? (eg Does the engine have a dip-stick... ? have you worked out a way of accessing the battery without removing the drivers seat? Have you had any more feedback about the gearbox life expectancy?)
