The car may have been caught on camera on the way home from buying it.

the only way they could of caught you on camera iz if you went through an ANPR camera set up but if you went through that then you would of been stopped by the old bill...and the other way iz a mobile private ANPR van and i did not think they operated outside of london yet??? i know that cause the firm i work for euro car parks runs a couple down london and they are waiting on the govt to allow em to operate in other parts of the country like on the bbc prog bailiffs....

The van they were in had DVLA, NCP clamping division and speed camera logos on it.
The ignorant get said i'd been seen by a mobile van! But wouldn't give me any more details than that.

private anpr van then...came up untaxed on the computer but when they do a phone check cause you have a disablded badge it then shows up on the dvla system as taxed....they dont have direct access to the dvla servers i belive so their info may be not 100% upto date... the sign on the side of the van may well of indicated a National Car Parks partnership with the DVLA i know that they are in the running as we are for several council run off street parking enforcement contracts i was told this by my supervisor the other day....and trust me they will say its not profit run but we all know it is...

The mobile ANPR vans have their own database not directly linked to the DVLA which needs to be regularly synchronized so it’s not always bang up to date. You may also have passed a fixed ANPR camera on the motorway which detected your vehicles SCORN status as they are everyway (London is defended by a whole ring on all entry roads) in modern Police state UK.  They were set up under the guise of the prevention and detection of terrorism and serious crime but there use is gradually being moved into the revenue collection business which is far more profitable. The DVLA (or its private contractors / enforcers) then followed it up looking for some easy money from you by way of a fine. BTW your vehicle can also be clamped even if it’s on your own driveway pending you coming up with the cash.  The whole system is now a ruthless money making operation completely devolved of any common sense.

It was driven on a stretch of motorway which has variable speed limits (M40?)
although they were turned off they are a possibility

No variable on M40, but is on M42 if you went anticlockwise around Brum...

The ANPR camera's are completely separate to the speed enforcement camera's (that’s another jolly crew  ;D). They are quite often much more covert and have been quietly installed on many major routes and every main road into London. Now you understand why Mr David Davies MP resigned to fight a campaign about the big brother state.
Obviously to gain public acceptance their anti terrorism and crime role was massively emphasised. Now they are in place its very tempting to use them for other purposes and make back some of the money to cover their running costs  :y.

got the impression he would have clamped had the car not been registered as a disabled vehicle, which i believe they are not supposed to clamp whilst on a public highway.

Jaime, i blame you for living down south!

You can not clamp a car showing a blue badge, regardless of tax disc as blue badge can be used in a car that is not taxed as disabled. :)

It could of been you passed a police car, marked or other wise and it trigged it's ANPR and they where "busy" with some thing - hense details passed on.

it could of been a neigbour who saw the car with no tax.

It could be all kinds of reasons, what the guy in the van doesn't need to be true.

To be fair the guy in the van might of been a bit of arse hole, but christ imagine the abuse he gets every day :)

TBH, I love the idea of camping untaxed cars, almost as much as I love the local policy of a HiHab and then a photo of the crushed and cubed motor been shown in the local press :)
