Very Interesting LPG Statistics
« on: 16 June 2008, 11:29:54 »

Hi Guys

Because I'm so busy at work, I just got the calculator out and worked out, in realistic terms, how much cheaper it is to run on LPG, with todays prices.

The proof is in the pudding...

With an MPG of 26 and petrol at 117.9 per litre, cost of driving is 20.6p per mile

With an MPG of 20 and gas at 54.9p per litre,    cost of driving is 12.5p per mile

500 miles on petrol at 26mpg costs £103.15
500 miles on gas at 20mpg  costs £62.45

Driving on gas is therefore 8.1p per mile cheaper, and over the course of every 500 miles you would save £40.50.

For someone who does 500 miles a week, this works out at an average saving of £182.25 per month.

Going on the above statistics, running on LPG will save you on average £2187 per year.

Therefore if you keep your car for 5 years, you will save in total £10,935.

For someone buying a DIY kit from Jeremy at a cost of £700, you would need to cover 8642 miles in order to break even on the cost of the conversion.

Needless to say - I am ordering my kit for the Estate next week!!

When I had my first car converted I was driving about 3,000 miles per month. Even with it being converted for me rather than doing it myself it only took 6 months to recover the cost. Wouldn't be without LPG these days.

LPG is an excellent idea for thirsty cars. However the more popular it becomes the more expensive it will get. The government will make surei it is taxed more.

Jeremy must be shifting those kits at quite a rate at the moment!

The 4 pot seems to convert even more painlessly than the V6 using those kits. Set the gas pressure and re-did Marie's mapping last weekend and it took very little adjustment.

Can't wait to get mine finished. Will be having another onslaught on it next weekend  if you fancy a it of spanner wielding.

I copied Jay W's idea of mounting the ECU under the airbox in the self levelling suspension pump area and it's a lot easier.

after chaging the cats, exhaust and lambda sensors I can say lambda sensors and exhaust system is playing a very critical role in consumption..

ps : I tried sport style front section exhausts (instead of cats) and consumption was really high ( and was a leak) ..Going back to smaller diameter front section exhausts consumption values are dramatically dropped..(with negligible performance loss)

pps: complete system was original vx/opel except the cats..

so far i have done 1500 miles on mine and it is just starting to settle down a bit more now, the MPG is getting better.....

That said i am tempted to get another manifold and see if i can get the nozzles closer to the petrol injectors, Kevin's pic has me thinking about that

One thing i would add to this is that the payback isn't just in the running costs......

Don't forget that LPG'd cars are easier to sell on and command a higher price than a petrol car of the same age/mileage, so in effect that will help to recoup costs as well  :y

I was planning to buy the conversion on payday (25th) but to be honest, I'm tempted to stick it on the credit card until then - do you think there'll be a shortage of kits?

Those figures tie in quite well with what I'm actually getting after the first month .. which includes 200 miles of towing as well..

Ltrs Gas 239.87, cost gas £135.23, miles 935, consumption 17.7 mpg cost/mile - (Actual gas) - 14.46p

Estimated petrol figures ( based on 23 mpg solo, 17 mpg towing)

Ltrs petrol 197.13, cost petrol £230.27, cost/mile 24.63p

Saving = 10.16p/mile

These figures of course are for the 3.2 V6, and I don't hang about .. :)

As long as you can get 8000 miles in before it goes up, it's a no-brainer :y
