If it has to be a Dongle then probably Huawei in some shape or form, at least with them you can download there Own Connection Software rather than rely on the shitey Network Branded stuff that comes with it.

Personally cant remember the last time I used a Dongle, tend to use old or near broken Mobiles and stick em high up somewhere near a window in WiFi Hotspot mode, works a lot better. To get any decent speed out of Mobile Data its all about good Signal Strength.  ;)

I am guessing you are talking about improving your Wi Fi capability and not 3G dongle for accessing the Internet.

If it is the first one, I can recommend TpLink. Easy to use and very small. With its cap on they are about 1 inch long , half an inch wide and quarter of an inch thick.

Wouldn't have though a Dongle would be any better (Strength wise) than the in built one. might be easier to sort the WiFi point issue out first or use a cheapo repeater.  :-\

I was just thinking that the laptop is rather old and I new dongle with newer software etc might connect better to the bt homehub 5.

Without knowing what the issue is, guessing Signal Range, the newer software wont make any difference to signal strength. As you say could be old lappy, most have the WiFi Aerial in the Lid with the WiFi Gubbins on or near the Main Board or Lid, so could be a worn hinge cable, but just guessing really.  :-\

I am hoping I haven't got the wrong end of the stick, but I found this WiFi adaptor to be excellent value and performs well, giving superb reception from my Sky Broadband downstairs to this PC upstairs.
The Auction Number is 221048809437 and is on a "buy it now" offer of £6.75 including postage.
I also bought a very natty and well made battery voltage monitor that plugs into the cigar lighter socket and gives a digital readout. I am amazed at the price of this item - £2.10 including postage - I could not buy the display for that money!
The Auction Number is 130860507738.

USB Wifi devices are always weaker than onboard Wifi (by nature of the more compromised antenna).  However, if the onboard one is old, it may only support B/G, so may be benefit in getting N capable, or if the router supports 5Ghz, getting a 5Ghz USB (note - 5Ghz more affected by walls etc).

It may be possible to replace the onboard PCI/PCIe one with a newer type, but double check the form factor and the antenna lead layout.

For USB ones, I have a couple of cheapo Edimax ones here (bought, because they work with Raspberry Pi), and they are "OK".


For a 54Mbps wifi, expect the throughput to be around 20Mbps max - well below superfast broadband speeds offered by fibre broadband packages from Virgin or BT based services. In hostile areas, it will be lower.

If all wifi devices are slower, it may be you are too close to another access point on the same/adjacent frequency (most channels overlap, except 1,6 and 12, and these tend to be the default channels that most routers use, and thus will cause problems if used). Windows tools such as InSSIDer will show what frequency local access points are on, including those with hidden SSIDs.

If you can live with something on the end of a usb cable, the Alfa AWUSO 36H is the best I can find.

Put it this way, I can sit in my car 50 yards down the road and still use my houses internet which is at the back of the house  :y
A little word of warning, being a 5dB unit, it will drain the juice out of your battery if not plugged into the mains.

Costs about 15 quid of ebay via China

The one I suggested is £6.75 (£5.75 if you buy two) all inclusive and has a decent antenna; still from China, so you do have to wait a couple of weeks.....
