Top tip Ian with the ebay code reader, ill give it a shot. Thanks for that.

As I mentioned before, the car came with no paperwork at all, so I have no idea if the cam belt has been done. Is it something thats easy enough to check, visibly? I dont have any problem getting my hands dirty, but I'd rather leave off opening the engine to someone a little more... competent. Less prone to snapping the heads off bolts, etc.

That being said, I can have a bash at doing the oil/filters to save a few pennies. Would it be worth picking up a workshop manual to do this, and if so is there one thats recommended by the community? (My other cars an old mx5, and theres a manual a couple of blokes did in their garage thats better than the Haynes one)

That lack of adequate servicing might be the root of some of the issues would make sense to me, as I mentioned before the car hasnt really been looked after that well.

Ill get the code reader and post the results when it arrives. Thanks everyone for the continuing help and interest in the thread!
This site is better than any workshop manual  :y And the pictures are better  :y

Get one of them code readers and plug it into your car and get the codes, And then post them back on here. And all going well you will be pointed in the right direction.  :y

Well, I bought the code reader and finally found the time to use it.

In the "Engine" category, it showed one code:

P1700 - Manufacturer Control

In the "A/T" category, it showed 3 codes:

P1781  - Manufacturer Control
P1792 - Manufacturer Control
P0727 - Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal

I'll do some searching on the forum, and general googling and see what that turns up, but I would appreciate any insight you could offer.

Those codes point to an intermittent cam sensor problem

That seemed to be the gist of most of the other topic I searched through. I'm happy enough to give it a try, as the part cost seems small enough to be worth the risk if it doesn't work. I am a little weary of going on a wild goose chase with replacing part after part until I find the right thing though!

I can only seem to find Haynes manuals for the 1994-1999 model, is that just because the later models are the same?

2.0 16v in Haynes is essentially the same as the 2.2 :y

Only buy a genuine Cam sensor from a real, live Vauxhall dealer that you physically have to visit to order, buy and collect. Do not buy online :y

(Sorry to bang on about that, but better to buy right once...)

The far superior V6 allows you to carry out the pedal trick though :y

I think, being later, the Corsa might be OBD2 compliantt, as might the desmonds,  whereas the V6 isn't :-\

Unfortunately repairs never got around to being made. The car just ended up sat on the drive for a few months doing nothing, and now we are moving house it will have to be sold. Pity, because it probably didn't need much to put right. Oh well, ebay can have it.

Cheers everyone, thanks for the help and advice but alas, t'was not to be!
