front screen misting up
« on: 14 November 2014, 16:50:21 »

Hi. I am new to here and have a problem with my 2001 omega 2.5dti. I have had it for 2 year now, and when the winter comes along, the screen mists up completely so I am unable to see. At. first I thought it might be the heater matrix, but then it would do it all the time. Then I read it could be the pollen filter that needed changing, changed it and no difference. Then I checked to see if there was a water ingress, cant find one. I love the car and don't want to get rid of it, but it is near on impossible to drive in wet or cold weather.
I was hoping someone might know what is causing it.
thanks in advance
Andy

Does the aircon work, and if so, do you use it?

Do you have air con / climate control ?? If so, are you actually using it ?? If you are .. is it working properly (sufficient gas)??

Part of the air con function is to dry the air as it warms it; this time of year warm air with moisture in it hits cold screen and mist will form .. if the air con is working the warm air is dry so no moisture to cause the mist.

Air con / climate working properly will solve the problem for you.

Another cause is wet/damp carpets caused by a blocked/overflowing scuttle drain .....

bugger .. beaten to it ...

You mention that you have changed the pollen filter.....did you use a genuine one or a cheap after market one..also as mentioned make sure that the air vent in the boot is not covered up...thats the right hand side as you look into the boot where the cloth panel opens up...look down into the base and you will see the plastic  grille,,as some people stuff bits it there not knowing there is an air vent in there that needs to be free to let the air pass through. :y :y

thanks to everyone for their advice. I will look into all these tomorrow. The air con is working although not as efficient as it should be, but at the moment I am running it on economy to see if it makes a difference, which at present it doesnt

Another cause is the recirculation flap getting confused.

Mine used to do it occasionally, pressing the recirc button (to drive it closed) then again after a pause (to drive it open) would clear the screen again.

It hasn't done it since I fitted a replacement alternator (which ties in with a bulletin citing low voltage being the cause).

Check the fill valves and condenser for obvious leaks, rectify as required and get it regassed :y

There's a system pressure discrepancy between it being too low to work properly, but not low enough to shut the compressor off. Regassing it anyway might be enough to get it back upto scratch until the spring :-\

Bit chilly for stripping the condenser out, although from your name, you might be used to British winters ;D

If your Aircon isn't working, then it's a bit pointless pressing the ECO button, as it's in ECO mode anyway!  ;D
