I'm only taking £150 for a deposit....so not too much to lose  should my usual stupidity overwhelms common sense.

Yes you should dig out that Wheeler Dealer episode where they had the TVR, as it will give you an idea of what might be involved.  I think they spent about £4000 on top of the purchase price and that (as ever) didn't take account of Ed China's time and labour!

That goes for most car programmes, really.. so much bollards is spoken it's unfunny at times.

Still, it's entertainment and gives me hope that maybe one day I could escape IT and rebuild cars for a living

Oh, and I offered him a jump start once when he was having trouble starting his garden shed and he didn't come across as desperately grateful.
