Cam cover gaskets
« on: 30 January 2015, 15:30:19 »

as ive done alot of mods on my engine with very good results and a lot of money thrown at it with custom parts made especially for me,why do vx charge so much for a bit of rubber, where ive actually used other makes and never had a problem, maybe because im using very high performance oil and it gets changed every 3k ,thought please.

Cool, these are 1 of the items that ive never had to get custom made, all tho money is no object to me,i begrudge paying stupid money for a bit of rubber, now if it was a sexy cat suit with a 6' tall busty blonde then hell yes i could justify it  :y

The issue is a combination of things...

Firstly, cheaper pattern gaskets tend to harden and go brittle over time.

Secondly, if the breathers aren't kept clear then internal pressure forces oil past the failing gaskets leading to oil leaks and potentially killing plugs/leads/coil packs.

As I'm sure Dbug will testify, Allgermanparts supply an alternative to the GM ones which do seem to be upto scratch :y

Umm interesting, but i think with my setup breathers would never be blocked up,due to the oil i use,how often its changed etc, never had no problem with gaskets leaking using pattern parts tho,and bearing in mind my beast is not standard spec either  :y

The difference seems to be that on the cheepo ones, the half moon at the back tends to go brittle and subsequently leak.

You pay your money, you take your chances I suppose ..................

dbug, how long / miles has your cheepo ones been fitted ?

I would rather have the 6' tall busty blonde in a rubber cat suit than pay that much for a rubber gasket .

Perhaps... but if they only last a fifth of the time, then the GM ones work out cheaper once labour time is factored in...
