Had the same email, say's I can even use a 'watch' I can't be doing with all this new stuff, whats wrong with money?...............
Money is expensive. To make, use, store and move. Notes don't last long either, which is why we end up with coins of larger denominations. It's unlikely to be long before we get a £5 coin.
Far simpler than that ... money is untraceable, unaccountable, unquantifiable .... use a card, debit or credit, and the "system" knows where and on what you spent, likewise a phone/watch/ring/computer etc etc .... any electronic sale has "data" .. take out a loan/apply for credit .. you have to give the "purpose" .... all of which is "data" .. and, most folks don't realise ... but "data" has value .. it can be sold, and resold, analysed, investigated, turned to statistics, whatever ... it is traceable, storeable and historical......
Those who "do" all these things HATE money as it is outside their control and influence ... so the more they can get you to use their systems the happier they are, as they get more data they can sell on .....

Orwell was well wrong, we have gone far beyond what he imagined ... but not by governments, but by data analysis and commercial interest
