Talking of Mr Bosch,he made all these corrupt ECU's ??? ::) ::)

Indeed, I'm really wondering when that will come out. Somewhere, in a smoke filled room* at an engine test facility, there will have been a gathering of VAG and Bosch, etc. engineers and probably some consultants, scratching their heads wondering how to make the engine meet its' emissions targets yet not get through AdBlue / DPFs like they were going out of fashion.

The techie from the ECU manufacturer will have been expected to pull something out of the hat, and will have suggested "well, we could always switch on the naughty mode".

So, he only did that for VAG, then? ::)

There's also the point that Nick W makes. Did the powers that be really expect to get realistic "on the road" emissions figures from such a contrived, superficial and easily manipulated testing regime with seemingly no independent oversight?

*- Not really, that's against EU reg.... Er..Um..Ahh, breakit <lights up>

I suspect the ECU designers, unknown at this moment I believe, offer some basic capabilities, including some kind of extra-eco mode (and a performance mode etc).  It will likely be the car designers that set how/why/when/if such a mode is used.

The US these days look at overseas companies as useful sources of extra public revenue, which means with any transgression they are pursued with the utmost zeal and get fines where at extra zero or 2 is added compared to their US counterparts. Goods recent examples are BP and our banks. ??? ??? ???

It could aslo effect Audi going into F1 as it was the CEO of VW that was for them giving up on sports car series and joining F1

As I said in another thread it'll have to be Skoda F1 instead!  ;D

my understanding of what they did is produce a low polluting diesel (so as to pass the US tests) then via the firmware re-configure it to be much higher polluting when being driven normally (so the car would be powerful to drive).   the consequent extra NOx pollution is estimated worldwide to be, daily, the same as the entire NOx output of all UK power stations, vehicles, industry, and agriculture emissions combined.  criminal.

Quote
A Guardian analysis found those US vehicles would have spewed between 10,392 and 41,571 tonnes of toxic gas

VW’s defective vehicles could be responsible for between 237,161 and 948,691 tonnes of NOx emissions each year

Would or Could? Hmmmmmm.

Lot's of variables there.  I'm hoping you don't leave your Electricity and Gas usage estimates to The Guardian.

I'm not knocking the fact you are interested in this - I am too!  Just wish people would stop sprouting shit on the Interwebs before anyone knows anything.  We are not the press.... If I want to read a piss-poor newspaper, I'll read it.  Ta.

guardian: "The company admitted the device may have been fitted to 11m of its vehicles worldwide. If that proves correct, VW’s defective vehicles could be responsible for between 237,161 and 948,691 tonnes of NOx emissions each year, 10 to 40 times the pollution standard for new models in the US. Western Europe’s biggest power station, Drax in the UK, emits 39,000 tonnes of NOx each year."

seems fair enough journalism to me.  a "piss poor" newspaper like the daily fail quote would be

"hitler's descendents f**k the planet"

or daily excress

"vw car killed lady di in tunnel assasination plot"

I'm astonished.  Don't get me wrong, I don't know you from Adam, unless your name is Adam?

Still.  You actually believe this shit?

Do you not notice the huge array of 'may' 'could' 'might' 'possibly' type of words used in these publications?

You really are the sort of person I enjoy having a pint with in a pub..... entertainment at it's finest!  ;D

Also, the NOx figure for Drax is about 40 times lower than the factually accurate figure of 1.56MILLION tonnes.  I know this as fact, because a bloke at VW told me.

My thoughts entirely.

I was hoping you could add something more to the party* than a misquote from a shower of shite newspaper.  Obviously my hopes have dwindled and died.

*No, I don't consider this to be a 'party'.  You know what I mean, along with the word 'debate'.
