Zafira gearbox oil ?
« on: 19 September 2015, 18:22:57 »

Hi all   . . . my neighbour over the road has had a used gearbox fitted to his wifes 1.6 petrol zafira . Fitted by a couple of his mates  ::) ::).

It is a F17  manual box   but he cannot find which oil to put in it . He went to Halfords & they said it's a special VX only supplied oil.

Can anyone suggest what can be put in to get him back on the road for tomorrow as VX not open now until monday

TIA  Al :y :y

ATF as long as it's Dexron2. I've used this in gearboxes and as PS fluid for years with no issues.

I bought mine from Vauxhall, it doesn't hold much & though I can't now remember how much it was I'm sure it wasn't expensive. I know it was red which ties in with Deviator's ATF

Do NOT use Dex in the modern Vx gearboxes, cold shifting will be awful.

The Sintofluid is preferred as its a good fully synth oil that gives good shifting properties throughout the operating temperature range and works well on the F17W as well as the M32 and others.

OK mark  thanks  . . .but there is now a major problem :'( :'( :'(

My  neighbour has had box fitted but there seems to be no neutral selectable :o :o

He called in someone who has a good deal of experience on these & he confirmed that box is furbared as no neutral :'( :'(

Box was purchased from a breaker in Halifax for £100  + £35 courier  .

Breaker says car was driven in so box was ok . Guessing he did not check it before removing it. >:( >:(

IMO I don't think my neighbour is going to have much joy with this breaker  >:( >:(

Sounds more like the linkage is not correctly adjusted, the simple test is to disconnect the linkage and manually select the gears for neutral and try it.

This proves or rules out the box being faulty.

F17s are two a penny and mega reliable as they have been around since the days of the Cavalier.

The guy he called in yesterday done exactly that Mark . . .  no neutral selectable .

So will any F17 from other models  be ok ?

Needs to be the correct ratio and bell housing pattern.

But as the 1.6 was fitted to Astra's, Zafira and also some Corsa and Vectras, its an easy enough box to source. The original cam belt 1.6 and 1.4 were the same blocks.

Its worth popping the selector unit off the top to the box (easy enough to do) and check the selector linkages are aligned (top right as you look in there are a set of 3 metal notches, they must be in line for neutral)

Oh and remember that if the wheels are off the ground then they will still turn in neutral...... :y
