Bloody Computers
« on: 29 September 2015, 18:07:46 »

Switched laptop on yesterday morning, used it, went for a shower, came back, it had switched itself off.

Re-started it, came up with Windows repair - which failed.

Put in my recovery disc - failed.

Had to download Windows 10 on my PC and totally rebuild the laptop.

At least I've got a nice clean machine now!

Restored all my files and photos :y

Feeling smug, as I back up regularly :)

Serves you right for using W10 :P

At least the install is easy and generally trouble free, and you've lost all the historic tat :y

I like W10. But I'm wary of it.

My only 2 true bugbears are the wifi (always need to boot twice to get wifi to work) and Edge is incompatible with OOF

We only have it on the lads laptop. Wifi is fine and I don't think he's interested in OOF.

Too many issues on Win10 for me still, all Windows related, back on good old 7 for now.

If you must use 10 in its still early days, partition your drive for OS / Programs / Files / OS Image or Ghost and be prepared to Ghost / Image your OS once a week, as far too many issues relying on win10 doing a good Restore or Recovery on itself at the moment.

Similar thing happened to my lappy on Win10 (wasn't a clean Install) it just turned itself off one day but when it booted back up all I had was a black screen, Now running Win7 again been trouble free since then. Does make you backup more often when these things happen that's for sure.

Btw Stemo, iOS9 been running smoothly here also  :y

...actually awaiting on the new 6s Plus 128gb to be delivered in the next week or two, good timing an all almost run out of room on my 64gb 6 plus :-X  ::)

I concur (though using Cloud storage as primary replication (but NOT a backup) alleviates a lot of the data risk. Everything else is recoverable.

My Wifi issue may be related to the age of my laptop - I found the invoice a few days ago, purchased in November 2007.  I vaguely recall a similar wifi issue with Win8 on this machine, although I soon went back to Win7 to overcome other issues.

Very happy with Window 10 here.

No issues with WiFi.

Sadly, Edge is a pile of toss, just like IE.

I've been a lifelong (since it started) advocate for FF.  However, that's starting to pull my pisser too.  Might have to give Chrome another go..... but that means I'll have to insall an AV, and I hate memory hungry software (I've only got 16GB).

Thinking back when I installed Win 10 the black screen thing was the graphics card and needed to update the Radeon drivers from the Radeon site. Wasn't painful but I wasn't expecting it. Everything ok since. As said Edge not compatible with some sites but I am sure mine is ok with OOF. Will check tonight when back in uk.

Computers are there many malfunctions seem to be the only piece of equipment that folk put up with. Anything else and we would be complaining. I find mankinds acceptance of computing issues breathtaking. Imagine if you got in your car, trainplane or whatever and it suffered system operating problems as frequently as you do on a computer.Or the cinema. "sorry start of film will be delayed, just have to do a clean install." You would want your money back. However with a computer it is part of the experience.

I got caught out with that too and although I`d already downloaded the driver I couldn`t navigate to it due to the black screen but I was using a new GPU and the generic driver wouldn't work in windows 10.
