BT upgrade help pleeeease
« on: 04 November 2015, 18:22:35 »

hi guys,

just renegotiated our bt. we have signed up for a new contract for unlimited broadband, bt sport and bt channels.

on the phone they asked what we had currently....its an old sky box with freeview card. they mentioned to get the extra bt channels we mayneed to upgrade our aerial. but they assured me we'd still have what we have at the moment (freeview) with no change.

anyways, the bt tv box has arrived. our aerial is a screw in type. the new bt box is a push in type and thus they wont mate up.

do I need an adapter like this....

http://www.amazon.co.uk/kenable-Connector-Socket-Aerial-Adapter/dp/B003OSUU14

...for this to work?

cheers all :)

The screw-in type (European) is connected to your Satellite Dish.

The BT box won't work with your Sky Dish.  You'll need an decent TV Ariel to pick up Digital Broadcasts.

I thought he had an aerial...no dish. That's what he said, anyway.  ;D

And yes, I think that adapter would be fine.

I'll admit, I'm making assumptions, but as it's a Sky Box, chances are The Bear has been receiving Freeview from the Satellite Dish.  :-\

If so, the BT Box will not work.

I've never heard of a 'sky box' with a freeview card either, but it's obviously got a decoder for a terrestrial signal. Someone has set it up somehow. :-\

Are you sure you haven't already got an Aerial in the loft?

If not, a half-about Aerial will cost ~£50.  Depending on your location and environmental influences around you will determine how 'good' an Aerial you will need.  Tall buildings, hills etc between you and the transmitter will cause problems and will require something decent.

Then you need to run the Coax Cable from the Aerial to the BT Box.  How would you intend to do that?

Then fitting of the Aerial.  Do you want it in the loft (fine for excellent reception areas, not a good idea for bad reception areas).  Cost of fitting externally will be the higher cost-point... ~£150 for someone better qualified than Rod Hull.

This gets worse...fickin hell. If you've got a wall socket, and that wall socket is connected to an aerial, then you just need a fly lead. Like the one that goes from your box to your telly. Jeez.... ;D

EDIT: posted before Webby's last reply.

When you cancel a Sky Subscription, the Sky Box effectively becomes a FreeView Box, receiving Digital Broadcasts through the Sat Dish.  The card will just be a de-funct Sky Card.
