Hi all,  i have a 2.6 elite with self leveling shocks on the rear.  I have tried to get replacements but i have been told it will have to be the main dealer.  Does anyone know of an alternative stockist?  Thanks

As far as I'm aware it's main dealer only. There are Carlton manual air adjust ones out there. (so you'd still retain the heigh adjustable, but require a foot pump)

Most people just replace with standard Boge, Sachs, Bilstein etc.. Same for Senators, which had a similar adjustable setup, just replace with standard.

Try "Allgerman parts" also try "autovaux" both sell self leveling shocks.

You're still confusing 'ride control' with self levelling.

Ok, it's 'similar' - That which is not the same as, but broadly speaking has commonalities in theme. An adjustable thingygummy on old Vauxhall Saloon suspension 

In the context what I was saying that most people replace the Elite's rear shocks with standard, in the same way that people tend to for the Senators.

No idea what you mean, Nick? New? is that like that stuff they have in boxes in shops? If the stuff I buy doesn't have surface rust or a film of oil over it, I don't trust it!

Does that also apply to consumable parts? And when the youngest of these cars is 11years old, there is a very fine line between parts that are used and parts that are used up.

Fair enough. Hence I look for low mileage on things where possible. Ok, I was making a joke of it; as you know, practically all my front suspension is new, apart from the steering knuckles, a few nuts n bolts and one hub. Looking around I reckon about £90 should sort you out for a pair of shockers and springs, vs whatever the Vx/other self-levellers cost. It could be that self levellers can be had for £45 each, I don't know. I'm not against new parts at all, otherwise so much of my car wouldn't have it, and also same for genuine Vx, I use it whenever possible.

You do waffle some shit...

Decent new shocks are £55+, SL ones are just over £100 now and a set of decent springs will set you back around £120...

Basically, if the self levelling works fit new VX air shocks, if it doesn't, then replace the lot.

thanks for your response.  I tried to get some Monroe replacements and found that they are now obsolete and those that have them in stock want more than dealers for genuine GM part.  I went and bought one from dealers £134 inc VAT

Sometimes though needs must. I once bought a single self levelling shocker for my face lift MKI 2.2 Carlton, IIRC it was £80-odd over 20 yrs ago and one was all I could afford.
