Killed another BMW last night
« on: 16 February 2016, 18:15:37 »

Well last night I got in the BMW X5 in the yard at the nic after doin all the pre-checks, got 3.2 miles down the road and with only what I can only describe as a very very very very loud BANG!!!!!!!!   :o :o :o  I stopped the X5 (well it rolled to a halt)  ::) ::) ::)  dash lit up like a Christmas tree & for a moment I thought I was on fire with all the smoke. One quick change of under-crackers later, on a pitch black country road I got the torch out looked under the car where the smoke was coming from to see the remains of the front prop-shaft, the innards of the gearbox and about 8 litres of ATF spilling all over the road. :'( :'( :'(

RIP X5 2012 140k

Dunno what happened to it due to absolutely no lighting, but from what I could see the front prop had sheared right off, the sump of the g/box had a hole about the size of a fist so something had let go bigtime  :o :o :o

Stood there at the side of the road for over an hour freezin me nads off awaiting duty garage, only when they arrived and tried to put it on the back it wouldn't move  :o :o and the recovery waggon ended up being pulled towards it  :o :o :o

I think you'll find there's a recall for that exact fault on X5's....

Something about a driveshaft joint wearing prematurely and then failing catastrophically.

Nope, never have an advanced Vauxhall......as there aren't any  :-\ :-\ :-\ The Omega was the last one as far as I can see, the Vectra never really cut it & wasn't big enough - same with the Insignia.

Now with forces moving all their fleets to devil juice the only real contenders are Audi A4/5, BMW 330/530 or Jag XF as their diesel engines have enough clout to keep up with petrol derivatives.

Hopefully (said in loose terms) BMW will pay for the repairs as it is a manufacture fault, but I won't hold my breath.

I long for the day when the higher-ups smell the coffee and switch back to Petrol fuelled cars  :'( :'( :'(
