Classic status? It's a fickin 1.6 golf, and not even a particularly good one.

Have you seen the price of a 1971 1300L Escort recently?

Hell, I wish I still had the tidy, rustfree 1981 1.6GL Cortina that I sold 17 years ago for £75.
Indeed or my '84 Mk 2 Granada 2.8i Ghia X with factory manual box and lsd :'(
At 160 bhp, that engine was a blinder:y

A friend of mine had the same lump in a Capri 280. Couldn't sell it way back then. A different story today, no doubt.

Nice car let down by over long gearing which meant too much gear changing. This was made worse by the lack of low end torque when compared to the 3 litre 'Essex' unit.

You'd go blind(not to mention die, be buried and rot away) before you ever got 160bhp out of the bloody thing. Ford were using an optimistic dyno that day*** Colognes are very disappointing whatever they are in.

*** I'm on holiday, so am feeling generous: They lied about the 160bhp

Nowadays, of course, it would be considered lethargic.  ;D

Mate of mine, who was a dealer, thought his 2.8 Capri was "a beast"

Lethargic is a little harsh, but they're certainly no longer fast in stock form.

Driven loads of 2.8i, and a 3.0l is much better under 100mph: it will pull 3rd gear from barely moving round to about 5500rpm(if you can stand waiting the last 750rpm as a stock 3.0l runs out of breath under 5k). Both cars have the same 3.02 axle ratio, and a 3.44 from a 2.0l Capri improves the 2.8i acceleration but spoils the cruising ability too much for me even with the weak 5speed 'box. Fitting a 2.0l axle to a 3.0l car just spoils both; it actually increases the 1/4mile time!

A 3.0l is more fun to drive, a 2.8i is a really good cruiser.

I prefer a 2.0l as it is a much better all-round combination than either.

It used to be possible to do this to a 2.8i for under £200:

Old boy round here takes his MkII Granada 2.8 to the local main agents for repair/servicing/mot, :o he's spent an absolute fortune on it-unsurprising really :D I would think his has to be a rare survivor as it runs the carb fed engine!

They far outnumbered the injected Granadas.

I'm amazed there's still anyone in the workshop who is prepared to work on it! Assuming they don't sub it out ;)

That does surprise me I'd have thought injected engines to be more numerous,I bow to your greater knowledge though! No they don't sub it out, they still have a couple of "old timer"guys there, but I for one wouldn't fancy paying main dealer rates!!

puts 175 bhp for a 2.5 Omega into perspective.

Being 2/3rds the weight, the Granada will crack 8 seconds to 60... Summat a 2.5 Omega will never manage ;D
