Hi all.. Just after a bit of advice, or stories shared etc.

Mum may have to go into residential care soon if no real medical impovements are made. This in itself is ok... she will only go to the best which is around 2-3k per week. However... she may well be assesed as non nursing care in which case the bill falls to us as the family.

The only thing I could think of was to move dad in with us to save him money. The house is safe as it was transfered some time ago (just in case of such event)

I may be able to add weight to the asesment and deem that nursing care should be provided... but then its a nursing home... althogether different from the environment that mum would want.

I would sell the migs but dont think they would cover the first 2 days worth of fees   The estate may well have to go, for space if dad comes.

Its a very sticky issue.

When you say the house was transfered some time ago beware, 7 years is about the minimum term required and even then, if they can prove that it was in order to avoid such charges then they can still strip the asset!

If it really is 2-3K a week (are you sure that not per month) then nothing you can do is really going to make a dent on 150K per year!

Yes, that does seem a bit steep. Even the sale of a house wouldn't cover that for long.

yeah its about 2-3k per week depending on room location. House transfered around 12 yrs ago.

I may even consider giving up work to look after her if it comes to it. I can always take a research post or something more home bassed.  :-/

If the costs of the part of the treatment which are assessed as social care fall on you, wont you be expected to sell your parents house anyway, if it is not your permanent residence?

I rather hate all this. It is a real worry for anyone with elderly relatives. I mean, FFS, how do they arrive at £2-3K a week.

Its a mare! When you look at such places that pay staff the min wage, allow about 2-3 quid per person per day for food... where is it going? and they rekon they are not-for profit organisations??!! Then why do they exist. LOL

They will get there money anyway they like in the end. I have even heard of peps families being asked to pay outstanding when the rels have died!  

May do a bunk to Scotland

You can see it would make a good court case in any other area of 'marketing' or consumerisim.

My Sympathies...

We are in a similar but, dare i say it worse situation with SWMBOS mother. Unfortunately the morgage free house was not transferred as SWMBOS dad had a long terminal illness as mothers health went into freefall.

Note to all - its not mercenary and its not devious. If you have someone close that is in a similar situation HAVE THE CONVERSATION about power of attorney / guardianship / transfwerring ownership.

Its the only way to keep whats owned by the family in the family and not in the Goverments pocket

As it stands SWMBO and I will need to bid at auction for her mothers house if we want to keep it.
