If it is the speech coil rubbing on the magnet (most likely cause), then the cost of repair could well exceed the cost of replacement.
Is this a cherished item?

Wharfedale did actually make some decent speakers years ago, depending how old they are and which models they may have matched speaker pairs in them.

As Ron says most likely the Coils have rubbed down, could also be a slim chance that one of the Caps in the crossover may have gone leaky.

If it was me, I would swap the Speaker them selves over from each cabinet and see if the fault moves or stays to each cabinet, that will point down to the faulty component. Guessing its come from the Bass Speaker or could be Mid Range if fitted.

As said though you can get some bargains these days on second hand speakers vs the cost of repair.

The speakers are quite old but in very good condition .. Like these :

Roughly 20" x 10 x 10   I'd like to keep them if possible . But as you say some decent bargains to be had for a replacement pair of a different make if wanted . Any recommendation of speakers  :)

Have you positively identified the drive unit yet, and if so, what is its model number or other ID? You have nothing to lose by blowing air from a tin into the speech coil if you can gain access, or more drastically insert fingers of PTFE in the gap between the coil and magnet.
Or look on eBay!

Ive always rated Missions myself.

Some of the Classics, - Mission, Kef. B&W, Q Acoustics, Quad, Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, Tannoy, to name a few.

For HiFi Speakers, stay away from Bose and anything made in the Far East.

That's a surprise as the front fabric covered panel usually comes off, allowing access.
I'm not familiar with that model, but heavy is good - suggests a grown-up magnet!
Does the back come off? You might then be able to squiet some clean air into the coil space via a straw from the tin of air?

Try harder, if the box is sealed, ie no screws around the back, the speakers will be mounted from the front.

No access to these im afraid without doing some damage . must be sealed from factory  :-\ Ive had speakers you can take the front covers off but these its not possible . Its not crackled yet since blowing in the front 3 holes .

Id estimate these speakers weigh at least 5-8ib each  :o :o

Before doing anything drastic, have you tried swapping the two speakers over side to side to see if the problem follows the speaker or stays on the same side? I'm thinking it could easily be a problem in the electronics.

I have a pair of Mission 733i floor standers and think they`re great, really good neutral sound to them, perfect partner to my Cyrus Straightline amp 8)
