I challenge "sensibly"; our system is perfectly logical, and correct. Sadly, as usual, the Americans take our perfect systems and 'dangle berries' it up - they did the =same with the wonderful language that we gave them!
Recently, the OED declared that our lexicon had passed the one million (that's 1,000,000) word mark. I believe the American word count is almost up to 55 now - some of them with TWO syllables! ;D

DG, you misinterpreted me, or I was not clear enough!
Million = 1 x “000,000” = 1,000,000 = 1 Million
Billion = 2 x “000.000” = !,000,000,000,000 = 1 Billion
Trillion = 3 x “000,000” = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 = 1 Trillion
