I think until you've got the measure of new members it's difficult to know how they'll interpret a post that's perhaps critical, cynical or in jest and it's also difficult for them to know how seriously to take such a post from someone they don't know.
If they are new to the forum and perhaps a little nervous they'll probably lean towards taking posts "the wrong way", TBH.
The only solution is to tread carefully until someone is well established, and if you sense that something is being taken the wrong way stop digging and resolve the situation.
The last thing we want is to be branded an "odd bunch".

Agreed Kevin, a tread lightly approach would be nicer for new people. even if they make a mistake and annoy us, perhaps adopting the 'turn the other cheek' option until they get into the swing of things.
I think many forums have the odd 'odd bunch' I think it is almost the norm, but it is also something that can give a forum character.
Oh dear, it would seem as if I have caught religion or something.
I am not trying to preach or anything, honestly.
