Whilst I can understand the reason for RMCB's departure, which I think is sad :(....I do strongly agree with STNO123 comments regarding religion, and have thought the same for many years, the sorry thing about that is that it is true. Whilst I have been christened, I have not done so with my children, as I believe they, when they are old enough, and should they want to get into religion they do it themselves without it being forced upon them.

Everyone to their own, however, I thought this site was about meegas, and having a bit of banter, and potentially debate on other not car related issues and a laugh amongst adults.

That wasn't you talking sense there was it mate?

He is talking sense there i haven't had my kids christened either and Mick thats absolutely spot on m8
Plus STMO123 IT'S M8 NOT MATE >:( ;)

Same here Mr Dundee, none of my children have been christened either, it is entirely their own choice when they are older ;)

I think the majority of our parents had us christened not from a deep seated religious conviction but more from a feeling that it was the done thing. As we say times change. Neither of my sons would have been christened but in the case of my eldest for the interference of my mother asking a vicar friend to christen him in hospital without my knowledge. I believe religion like any major life choice must be a matter for the individual and not their parents to decide.
Personally I think religion causes more war, strife and suffering than anything else on earth but that is just my opinion which I hope others will respect as I would respect theirs.
Now back to the usual mindless banter.

I think we are probably getting into the same kind of area that we were the other day, when we were ranting, sorry discussing political correctness. Quite a few of us hate PC but go along with it to avoid the feeling of being different and for an easy life.
My son comes home from school and tells me about Jesus and, even though I depise religion in any form, I wouldn't dare to take him out of the lesson or even tell him my views, for fear of being ostracised by the other parents, even though they probably feel the same way I do.

Christening - well there are a few thoughts about it - it was explained to me that you are not forcing the religion on the child, it is basically an introduction.

It seems the bit which makes you a member is baptism - seems a lot of effort to me to get free drink and food at a church.

So basically if you are the usual person who ticks CofE out of habit and is a BDM (births deaths marriages) Christening is not hypocritical at all.

I personally wouldn't push or deny religion as it is a comfort blanket for a lot of people, but I feel that people who devote themselves too much are wasting their lives and believe it or not I do NOT include Vicars, Bishops ect, as they have fulfilling lives, however I am including Nuns, Monks, people who have bits chopped off for religious reasons, and people who get intolerant due to religion.

Due to the large amount of people it helps and the fact quite a few scientists are religious means that like quite a few people am not anti or for but wonder what is out there.

I'd also go as far as saying that people who claim Jedi as a religion are entitled to as it is more believeable than quite a few official ones!

I read in some old books a while ago that Christmas has deeper origins in early man. It was a celebration during the colder months, with the intent of bringing good spirits and warmth to a cold, desolate environment.

I look upon it (christmas) as a celebration of family and togetherness. Religion has contorted and poisoned legend so much that it clouds judgment and prevents much rational thought. It had bought nothing but false hopes and bad omens upon humanity.

I understand Fin's feelings. Essentially, it is my belief that religious issues should be avoided here. Religion can be deeply personal and it is entirely understandable that some people could be offended. I find it particularly irksome that some people insist on poking fun at the concept of religious belief despite knowing the distress this may cause, and also others who say that religion is the cause of all the world's ills. In the case of the latter, incidentally, it is not religion but rather the hijacking of religion by zealots that causes the problems. Those zealots know the football supporter mentality that lies just beneath the surface of so many ignorant people. You can unite a people through hatred, not through love. To achieve their own lust for power, zealots whip up hatred against other countries using religion as a tool. You need look no further than Al Quaida and the Taleban to see this in action. Therein lies the subtlety. Religion, unlike statehood, requires a certain set of moral principles and behaviour to which those who ascribe to it should adhere. If an individual holds these moral beliefs dear, then any perceived threat is seen as a threat to not only their way of life and those of their future generations. The threat comes not from the fact that others adhere to a different moral structure, per se, but rather that the contrasting belief will be foist upon them, by force. Hence, it is not religion that causes the problems, but rather those who use it as a weapon.

My late dad used to say that there are two things friends should not talk about: religion and politics. We are, I trust, all friends on here. Let's respect others' opinions. Recently, in addition to the hi-jinks over religion, there has also been a great deal of lampooning of Bush. I am not Bush supporter, but why do those who post such things assume that we all share their childish desire to mock?

I don't for one.

Let's keep it friendly....and vaguely car related.

Hi Guys

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the previous comments, but I have learnt over the years, if you want to get on with people from all walks of life and have a happy camp and not lose a good friend.

Then in discussion steer well clear of Religion and Politics.

Otherwise your Guaranteed to deeply upset someone.

Never learnt how to spell though. :y

I must say that, having slept on this matter, I have to agree with Nickbat. My views and opinions haven't changed, obviously, but I, for one, will not be entering into any more dicussion about religion. Each to his own.

However, politics.......... [smiley=evil.gif]

Ok. I think this has run its course.

Fin took offence, although it is clear none was ever intended.
At no point was the religious significance of Christmas mocked or ridiculed in my opinion.
The commercial exploitation of this is another matter, and people posted very valid points.

We are conscious of not wanting to offend any more of our members, but neither are we going to curb the freedom of people to voice their opinion.

There is already far too much political correctness going on in this country. We are not going to start down that road here, it leads to dark places.
