And, just for the record, Nige, my fed up tone is in no way directed at your good self. I'm just thoroughly pissed off with life right now.

Places of worship remaining open is wrong imo. If you believe in God, you should realise he doesnt live in Church and you dont need to be there to worship or pray to him. Therefore its allowing risk of spread between quite a few people for no valid reason.

I just think there are generalisations, about what I want to do with my family, and the perceived risks that would present.

I'd happily get in my car, in the T4 area, drive to my family, meet them in a huge open space, even if just to see them in person. We would all happily maintain that distance, not hug, etc, and then go our separate ways again. Because that's far better than nothing!

I won't do it, because I can't break the rules. But I still maintain, that what I, and my family want to do, is far less risky than places such as churches and mosques.

I totally get that most familes, when allowed to meet, will flount the fules. Hence, I understand why the rules are in place.

I'm just genuinely, very sad, that I can't see my family, in what would be a totally safe way, at short notice.

That's not an "outrage bus". It's more to do with knowing my mum probably won't make Christmas 2022. I'm genuinely in bits about the whole thing  :-\

I can sympathise with that. My wife has health issues which are getting her down at the moment and she was really looking forward to our son ( her little Prince) being home at Christmas for the last time before he becomes a married man next year.
Its been taken away today, and Im working 12 hours Christmas day, so she will be home alone until 8pm.
She was in tears about it when Boris announcef it, but what can you do but suck it up.
The situation with your Mum sounds very different though. If I were in your shoes I dont know what I would do tbh.
I cant say I wouldnt be tempted to do what you were talking about - see her, but use common sense at the same time.

The thing that put our situation in perspective is that we heard a couple of days ago that a 60 year old woman, a mile from us, who we both worked with years ago, died from Covid.
What her husband and two kids will have to go through this Christmas doesnt bear thinking about, and doesnt leave us much of a right to moan about our situation.

Thanks for your reply, in all honesty I wish I hadn't said anything. I have said on many occasions, I should only participate in car related discussions, and this is a classic example of why I should probably stick to that.

Not that, even that, has much relevance anymore. How many of us own Omegas now?

What is pissing me off right now is the totally stupid "acquaintances" .. I no longer call then "friends" .. who see the "rules" as a "target" and are attempting, at every moment, to push them to the limit.

We can no longer see our daughter this xmas as she is now tier 4 in London, and is worried that, should she actually visit us she "might" pass the virus on .. (both C and I are rated "vulnerable" due to past illness/age)  and did she last weekend when she, legally visited, but knew nowt about this "new strain" ........

but folks we know have just booked a weekend in a hotel in London as they are "stir crazy" and want to get out .... and then got all pissy with me when I told them to stay away from my house when they come back as I don't wish to see them.

As I said earlier .. the virus is spread by people .. not rules/governments/rain drops or beer ... but PEOPLE .. stay away from other folks and you neither catch or spread the virus .. it is NOT difficult .. although it is neither "nice" or "comfortable" .. it is a fact ......

I apologise if I upset anyone .. but I am severely pissed off at the stupidity of some of those around me ..... I have also lost 3 friends this week, all past colleages in the RAF , and all of a similar age to me. Covid knows no discrimination .. it attacks everyone.

Agreed entirely. I encounter the same, and share your feelings.

Also accepted, and I'm genuinely very sorry for your difficulties, and losses. I agree, it doesn't care, who is who, or what time of year it is..

All I ask, is please don't categorise me as being like the "majority" of the public, or trying to get on some sort of band wagon.

I obey, and respect the rules. I would just love to see my mum, and if we could do that over a distance, outside, with no touching - we would both take that, all day long.

There have been a few opportunities to legally meet up through the year, but they have been fleeting.

I appreciate that if Christmas is your 'thing' that it sucks to be stuck at home. And I also am of the mindset that the lockdowns in general are an incredibly destructive thing for several reasons.

Personally, I would prefer to be working Christmas as that's just become habit, but had planned to spend it with family as my roster had my shift starting on Boxing Day night. And it was going to be an opportunity for Mum to actually get out of the house for a few days.

I am habitually programmed to either be at work or asleep, this year, without working since March, I think, all told, that I have probably socially met up with five or six people separately, and only gone out to either go shopping or walk the dog, so I don't see how, having spent nine months avoiding people, a five day liberty pass is so much to ask...

It is what it is, but it does kinda suck.

Incidentally, whilst no real substitute for being in the same room as someone, Zoom dinners are quite fun.

As a thought, do you have space for your Mum to move in with you?

Give me a minute, I'll go and measure the patio  ;D

Technically yes I do, although, jokes aside, as much as we we love each other to bits, and I'd never see her stranded, that wouldn't work, We love each other to bits, but if we lived together, one of us would end up under the patio  ;D

Just before you think I'm being insensitive, my mum has neurosis, and is a brittle type 1 diabetic, she needs a LOT of support, and whilst I try my best, I can't give her that alone........

Agree with you entirely, we have a neighbour who has organised a carol concert on a grass area near our houses, the idiot made it public on Facebook ,he looked amazed when I shouted across the road to him that he could put his carol concert where the sun don't shine, SWMBO said I should have been more tactful but I think the direct approach to a fu**ing idiot works better.

The new strain will be all over the country soon enough. This from the Manchester Evening News:

"While travellers flocked to the capital’s train stations as they tried to leave the city before the new restrictions came into force.
Passengers on one train were told that social distancing “will not be possible” due to the volume of people on board, and those that felt “uncomfortable” should not stay on the train."

Also:
"Shoppers filled London’s high streets, including Oxford Street as they rushed to buy last minute gifts following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement."

As said earlier politicians cannot win.

Give plenty of notice and everyone goes mad shopping, eating out etc before restrictions come in.

Give little notice and everyone moans , opposition parties shout poor organisation

In our Spanish province we now have a rule “ cafes and bars can be open till 10.30 but no alcohol to be served between 6 pm and 8 pm” Plenty of debate about ordering three rounds at 5.55 and so on. Police here do enforce the rules with big fines for customer and bar operator.

I am somewhat confused that, being in the very suddenly created Tier 4, I am no longer allowed to see my family at Christmas time, with less than a week's notice - but, in the same Tier 4, "places of communal worship" are allowed to continue opening and functioning?

It's not meant to be derogatory at all, I just don't understand it. I can't meet the three or four people closest to me, but, I could still go to a church / synagogue / mosque, with 100+ people in it, and that's ok?

It's actually very simple.. if you get off the outrage bus and apply a little common sense ...

Your visitors at home will be in an enclosed space, will hug and kiss and move around, and you will be in close proximity for a length of time ... ie .. you risk spreading the virus between you by personal contact.

In the place of worship, which is much larger, there are strict rules on "social distancing", "one way systems" and sanitising stations ....  you are there to pray and not converse with others, you remain distanced and the time limit is short .. the risk of transmision of virus is therefore much lower...

It's the same stupid argument about going to a restaurant versus a wedding reception ....  I can attend a restaruant with my wife, have a nice meal and leave, and the ONLY person I converse with is the one waitress. ........how many weddings have you been to where you speak to no-one ?? NONE .. everyone wants to speak/dance/converse .. it is the whole "social" purpose of going to the wedding .. to see relatives you haven't seen for a while ...

I really do wonder what has happened to common sense these past few months ....  The government is being blamed for "spreading" the virus .... pretty imposible actually... the government has given the virus to no-one.... as it is spread by personal contact between human beings ... YOU and ME ....

Stay away from other people and you don't catch or spread the virus .....  seeemples

Once again a very sensible and common sense explanation of the facts Entwood, and great advice from you   :-* :-*:y :y :y :y

Sorry to hear of your losses close to you :'( :'( :'(
