I think this old news as VDL announced that Russians are banned from EU airspace last night?  :-\

They have to go a long way round now to head west.  :y

Possibly, but I thought it interesting that the Baltic states were ahead of them. Especially given where Kallingrad is  ;)

Turkey is their last Euro route.

Incidentally, if they turn to China for everything, then that might mean less Chinesey shit flooding the markets here, which is no bad thing if it makes manufacturing more cost effective in the West.

The EU don't control sovereign airspace. Each country is free to decide who it will let in. At the moment it seems France, Spain, Canada and the USA haven't banned Russian registered aircraft.

The EU don't control sovereign airspace. Each country is free to decide who it will let in. At the moment it seems France, Spain, Canada and the USA haven't banned Russian registered aircraft.
France is moot if they have to route over northern Africa/Atlantic to get there... How long until Spain sign up?

Besides who controls/operates European ATC?

Besides who controls/operates European ATC?

Eurocontrol for most of mainland Europe. But Eurocontrol only administer ATC for flights with valid flight plans. Each sovereign nation can reject a flight plan which crosses its Flight Information Region (FIR). If a flight enters an FIR without an accepted flight plan in the system, QRA is typically sent up to intercept and escort. If the flight then enters sovereign airspace, QRA will order the aircraft to land at a designated airport (usually Stansted in the UK). If the flight doesn't follow the instructions of QRA then it's unlikely to end well.

Sovereign airspace only extends to 12 miles from the coast of a country, whereas a FIR can extend out several hundred miles. A flight from Kalinigrad to Moscow can therefore file a flight plan and hug the coast of the Baltics (12 miles out) and fly down the gap to St Petersburg and then to Moscow. However the various FIR's it crosses could refuse to supply ATC services. There are also special rules for gaps like the Gibraltar straights.
