Buzzing from headlining/rear window
« on: 21 June 2024, 17:50:58 »

Separating out into a new thread.

Got an intermittent buzzing from somewhere in the back, I believe to be in area of rear headlining or rear window, sounds like an airy wasp stuck in a confined space, or a relay chattering at high frequency.

Remove sigma pod containing the GPS antenna and DAB Band-L receivers, as it appeared to be coming from that area, and putting pressure on PCB changed the tone or eliminated it.

After a test drive with it removed the noise is definitely still there.

I had it present for long enough to do further tests.  The noise disappears if:
any window slightly open
and door open
sunroof tilted or open
climate turned off
pressure applied to OS top of rear window and/or that area of roof.

Can it be cabin pressure in the car?

Also, when it's making the noise, turning the climate fan down to 1 seems to stop the noise, turning up to 3 or higher seems to bring it on.  2 seems a bit inconclusive.

Sounds like the extractor vents may be blocked or shut causing pressure build up

That's now my thinking, just need to find where the exhaust vents are on an X351 XJ

That has got to be airflow related surely, it’s so reminiscent of a dried out leaf stuck in a vent. What’s confusing is why it stops with pressure applied in certain places.  :-\  I’ve had tinnitus for years but that would really get on my tit.   :y

Hmm, I’m not so sure now.  :-\  Time to find some access holes and pack some sponge around the rear roof to see what’s resonating. If I can help in any way just give us a shout.  :y

Sounds like a window motor under stress, and applying pressure to the glass is like putting your finger in the way of the glass going up and it stops the motr lifing the glass.

Does the rear screen leak?

Sounds like resonance of the rear screen possibly as a result of the bonding starting to fail.

That would be infuriating....from an outsiders perspective that noise is funny is break.

Rather than a wasp or bee, sounds more like a lady bee pleasuring herself with something from lovehoney  ;D ;D ;D
