I can confirm that pattern JLR headlamp washers from China are even worse than the JLR ones, though at £12, about a tenth of the price....

They only have to actually work once a year.. So far the original ones have managed that with a bit of fettling.

.. although I then need to remember to remove the relay so it doesn't syphon out the contents of the washer bottle overnight.

"My" MOT tester has yet to test the headlamp washers on my ML. It's not that easy anyway cos they don't wash every time the screen is washed

There's a button on the light switch on the S... Not seen the Tester use it though... He has enough trouble finding the on/off switch for the ESP.

I got an advisory for them leaking last year, so maybe I'll try my luck with them inop next year and see.

I've had varied success with Mr Grumps, my normal MOTer.

As it happens, I find the headlight washers reasonably effective, so I try to keep them working over the winter months.


But the screen washer being shitty, that is a right royal PITFA.  I had to get out yesterday driving back from Luton with a cloth and a sprinkle of water, after dry-wiping the guts of an enormous fly, and embedding it into the glass in a perfect arc, right in my primary line of vision.

If yours is like her XE, that has a decent screen washer that chucks up a decent amount of water, and for as long as you press the button for.  Unlike the stupid XJ fanciful washer trying to be clever.

Yes, nothing wrong with the screen washer. The headlamp washers dribble a bit of water in the general direction of the headlamps when working, then syphon out the rest of the washer reservoir over the next couple of hours.

Yes, nothing wrong with the screen washer. The headlamp washers dribble a bit of water in the general direction of the headlamps when working, then syphon out the rest of the washer reservoir over the next couple of hours.

I imagine a similar design to the XJ with those extending arms, although will be a different part number for maximum inconvenience, which could make them around £120 a pop for ones you get from a dealer (if your dealer's parts department can be bothered to deal with you), or around £15 from Ching Ching Chinaland.  Though believe it or not, the chinky ones are even lower quality!

On the XE, from memory, there is a valve with a spring in which should shut off the feed to the headlight  washers unless there is pump pressure (so its a check valve), its part of the T-piece part.

I know some have used a VW part to replace it with (281955187).

Maybe a good blow through with the air line might dislodge any crap or scale in there.

I'm guessing that part is too big for my XJ screen wash stuff - the T piece looks to be 5mm in, with 2 x 3.2mm out.

Ahh, that's useful to know. I was thinking about fitting something like this but if it already has one  I'll check it over.
