225 and 235 for the winter ok?
« on: 21 October 2008, 14:32:59 »

Hi all,
I am still thinking if I should buy a second set of wheels with smaller dimensions for the winter.  :-/
What are your experiences with those tyre messures?
I have real countrysite and one nice hill to manage by car every morning  :-?

Do any 5 studs Vauxhall Omega wheels fit? (regarding the dimensions of the brake)

Thanks!

Can't see your insurance being overly happy at that....

Rear Wheel drive wheels are different config to the FWD ones.

How much real difference this makes, I dont know.

Best bet would be to get some 15 inch Omega steel wheels......or maybe 4 spare wheels!

Tire shops mostly advice narrower tires for winter ( if we are talking about snow and ice ) so 225 and 235 are not useful ,  and expensive..

Hi all,
thanks for your advice.
In Germany Winter tyres are a MUST when you want your/opponents insurance to cover any damages! So I usually had either two sets of wheels or one set of all season tyres (also ok with the insurance) and no hassle with changing wheels. And of course you should choose the smallest dimension that would fit under your car.

So ok, back to the old times, I will try and find a set of nice(?) (steel) wheels. Would also give me the possibility to think about respraying my alloys as some f***** stupid want to be mechs' ruined the surface when mounting the set of tyres!  >:( It just needs a little bit of brain, a plastic cover and a bit skill to mount tyres without damaging the painting!  :-[

BTW: Does anybody accidentally have a spare set of wheels available and isn't too far off from South Bucks?  ::)

Thanks!  :y

I wouldn't say there's much of a need for winter tyres here, and they're certainly not a legal requirement, in fact an insurance company would be more concerned if you had tyres of a different size then original fitment, I reckon.

Rain is the worst you have to cope with, except for typically a couple of days per year. I can't remember the last time I was seriously challenged by the elements. I remember seeing a BMW driver who was, but he hadn't noticed the sheet ice and I had! :P

Agreed. Little evidence of anything other than plastic in most tyre depots though. >:( You might want to go to wheels in motion next time. They have a mounting machine that doesn't contact the rim at all IIRC. Not too far from you either.

Only time I've ever seen a plastic rim protector used, was when I had a motor bike tyre fitted at a bike tyre fitting shop.

Now, 205 section tyres on a 600Kg RWD car has made my life interesting on a few frosty mornings. Thankfully it responds quickly to opposite lock.  ;D

@williboy: I was more concerned about the size rather than the type!  ;) Winter tyres in Bucks would be really a little bit exaggerated!

@Kevin Wood: That is what I mean! And sliding with 225 and 235 is even more "interesting"!  :o

@Gaffers: You won't find it in the policy but surely on your invoice whenever anything happens!  ;) It is the same with the no speed limit on German Motorways: Have an exident even with you innocent don't wonder when you get a bill! Everything over 130km/h is rated as partly on your own risk.
