Calling all SAAB experts and general Opinions

Ok Safrane has just failed its MOT few things - steering rack and calipers - being a safrane we are NOT going to fix it as the rack is  A NIGHTMARE.

Have ten days till MOT runs out and wife URGENTLY needs decent sized runaround.....no more than 2 grand to be honest as she is not keeping it long ( eyes on a Landcruiser in summer)

Can anyone give me some thought, generally on SAABS as the one on the listing below, at £900 quid is very near and she likes it.

May be a little far to travel though.

That Saab 900i is basically a Vectra in disguise, so all points relating to Vectras are applicable....

I wouldn't have one...

9000's are really the only "proper" Saabs... but I am biased! ;)

There are several different 'generations' of Saabs, that are all a bit different on the reliability front.  Newer are generally much better, but then most cars over 10 years old are crap anyway.  Now they're as much Vauxalls as Volvos are Fords.  I'll never own one, but then our bad experiences go way back.  My parents had to trade their Austin America for the 3rd tranny for their Saab 99.  What a hunk of junk that was.

Sorry can't help with the car choice, Mark, but would suggest a wee amend to your original listing.

I take it the postcode posted is that of your nearest pub.  Thats what I normally do with these things, or use the Office postcode!!

Burglar Bill could easily come and play some hide and seek with your meega etc etc from the info originally posted.....   [smiley=evil.gif]

I own a 900s - 2.0L 16 valve convertible - the engines are solid but the engine oil requires frequent changes as the cat is mounted directly under the sump which is great for quick warm ups but if the oil hasn't been changed regulary it clogs the pick up pipe up and the engine then throws a rod through the block at 120 mph (well did on mine) also causes stretching to the timing chain.
The 2nd generation 900's and early 9-3's are based on the cavalier chassis - but built a lot better than a cavalier. they were available with the 54 deg V6 engine upto 1997 - they only tend to rot around the rear wheel arches.

All in all they are a very good buy - best to buy one with a service history though - especially turbo versions

V6 problems solved : Worked at the V6 Engine plant for 13 years on durability testing and warranty issues, this job included many trips to Russelsheim, Trollhattan, Michigan, Atlanta,keiserslaughtern.

From what i've been told by a friend of mine at SAAB tech in Peterlee try and stay away from v6 versions, nothing but problems although it Vx v6? and 4 pots are nearly as quick if not quicker in turbo form,and generally more reliable.  as has been said they do like an oil change regularly if not more than recommended :y

update to this - as the saab was sold i had to okeep looking...and now have ANOTHER vauxhall!!

I picked up a 2.0 sri 140 on w plate low miles good mot fsh massive irmscher twin exhaust, unmarked silver paint, air con cd player, 16" alloys.

£1750

Not my cup of tea but her indoors likes it  :y

She'll notice a difference in ride quality and noise to the big Renault but well done mate sounds like a good buy, nice Christmas present :y

Thanks Mate - yo always wonder just after buying a new car dont you  :-/ but looking at ebay prices and parkers etc i seem to have done all right  :y
