RWD is of course THE major factor!

My 1st car was a Chevette 1.3. My second car was a Chevette HS 2.3.

Both rear wheel drive. I did break away from Vauxhall on my next car with a Talbot / Lotus Sunbeam, but crashed it badly soon after.

All RWD. Then the FWD cars started to come along, until I got the Carlton which reminded me about the virtues of RWD and that's what I was referring to when I said I fell in love with the "drive"

the nearest thing to my car, by another maker, for same money, on auto trader, was an audi a8 diesel, some 4 years older and 3 grand more. Unless you wanted a 4by4 mitsubishi pikey machine which is just vile like all the other crap for similar money.

The omega is smooth, quick, comfortable, full of toys, and spacious. Cavanous boot and interior.

Its easy to fix, diagnoses its own faults, and has whats  reported to be, the most comprehensive car forum  available. I do get irritated when people mention the number of problems posted on here. Clearly not aware of the number of posts on other forums and how useless the help is on those sites is as a rule.

Bad points for me are the fuel economy, youd have to spend more than youd save on a more economic
car, and there is lpg which i am in the process of sorting out. Just imagine halfing your fuel bills, now thats having your cake and eating it.
And the stearing is a bit vague, i hate the way road surfaces pull. But thats it. 1 bad, all the rest good.

What worries me, if this one lasts as long as i hope it will, is what will i replace it with when the time comes? I have a fairly late model now already... Ill have to pay rather more to keep us in the manor to which we are accustomed. Considerably more...

Been a Vauxhall Driver from passing my test..

Bought a brand new Astra Gte on the plate change in 84 and it was nothing but trouble, even the wiring loom caught fire (in a petrol staion) quickish car in it's day, poor brakes and put me off front wheel drive.  Chopped in in for a brand New Sylvia Turbo....made the Astra look like it traveled in reverse.  Big lesson learned on buying brand new....never again, allthough I only lost £20.20 on the Astra in 8000 of motoring with it.  and that included the 12 months s tax.   ;D ;D

Went on to other models includung a Jag and a Daimler Soverein, tried the old 3.0 Granada.  Moved on to the Carlton, then the Carlton Diplomat Auto.

Now with any luck will only consider the Elite Class with the toys and will remain with RWD.

Might sell the GLS whn MOT is done and get an Elite Estate.

No real interest in speed these days, but nice to be in a car that upsets other drivers.  Not quick of the mark, but as mentioned in annother thread a few days ago, when the pockets rockets run out of steam the Elite just whistles past and waves bye bye to them.

Sadly Vx dont have a replacement for it. :-/

I passed my test in a Vauxhall Viva HC spent most of my weekends under it, came to change it found Vauxhalls fitted me the best. The love of my life since its unveiling was the Senator (owned 6 still have 3) I know they rust and when all the training courses are out the way I would love to learn to weld (under pressure from the misses to loose two of my senny's but NO! the line is drawn, two will deffinately return to the road). Never thought the Omega was a replacement for the senny untill I got into a 3.0 Elite, just missed buying it now have the 2.5 CDX its a lovely car and I'm pleased to say I was wrong :D. It led me to this site and your comments convinced me to give the Omega a try. All of the pre stated points apply and smooth gear cahnge on the auto box (not like my ex gaffers jag, put it in reverse it gave me whiplash!). Do we not forget cars are built to breakdown everything wears out thought the ease of repair on vauxhalls is good. I've seen a hell of a lot of so called better cars broken down and on fire etc at the road side as I have sailed on passed being thankfull it wasn't me. Toys wise always found Vauxhall ahead of their time, LCD dash independant temp control left and right etc and as Lizzie pointed out the illuminated visor vanity mirror. What about the simcard thing for your mobile phone, thought it was just modern motors that had them but no there's Vauxhall done it before. I do wish they had spent a little more time preventing metal worm, though maybe that's a kick back from the GM pedigree.

I am still amazed that GM didn't zinc coat all the panels. A major source of dissapointment in a car that is otherwise built to last a long time.

They got so much of the car right, it sticks out like a sore thumb.  :(

So true its a shame these excellent cars are dogged by such a small issue. Prevention is better than cure, though Vauxhall quoted me £450.00 plus Gordon's bit, for a senator drivers side door. I was in intensive care for  a forghtnight and still have the bump to prove it.

Maybe if they didn't rot they'd be more expensive.

As Its RWD i consider the Omega the last of the proper Vauxhalls

The Manual 3litre R28 Gearbox reminds me of a Vauxhall Cresta's Gearchange

They handle fairly well and are very quick they will pull 4 adults with no fuss and sit them comfertably and also the omega has loads of gadgets!

Which Cresta, the 1970s boring version, or the romantic late 1950s/60  PA version with column gear change? 8-) 8-) 8-)

Like this:

Although I prefere the pink / white version, with white wall tyres! :-* :-* :y

In all honesty I bought mine because I needed a car very quickly and a mate was selling it!

I sold my cav v6 to fund a Seat Leon Cupra, had that on the road a day before it developed a small problem of the engine falling out due to a damaged cast on the block. After spending £400 on that and still not fixing it I spoke to a mate who owned the Omega and a deal was done, all I had to to was give him enough money to buy some parts for his Evo powered Colt!
I've owned it for around 3 months, its done 10K+ miles and just past its mot so I'll be keeping it a bit longer! Owned several carltons and senators in the past, and the Omega still impresses me, being the td its not as rapid or as fun as the petrols, but I love the mpg and the relaxing ride, bring on the chip!!!

The size and specification of the car is perfect when compared to cost of motoring against other makes with comparable specs particularly when buying at 1 year old - cost me £15k 6 years ago - no massive bills (although VX have picked up the tab for a lot of stuff over the years) - however I would have had some big bills if it were not for this forum eg cid screen. If you sell after 1 iear - yes you will take a bath - but if you keep it - becomes a very low cost high spec car.

A lot of people go for merc and audi etc on basis of holding value - this is GENERALLY a complete fallacy as the cost base is higher and you lose a lot of money in real cash terms (forget percentages). I have just insured it for 4 drivers all business use with protected NCB for £320 - service is also relatively cheap as long as you are on your guard for rip offs.
