egay is now more for the buyer than the seller. the annoyoing thimg is there is nothing stopping you buying something, wait for it to be delivered then open a dispute and claim your money back thru paypal saying the item never arived. nothing seller can do about it.

Been there and got the T shirt ,ebay are shite to deal with had fall outs with them & paypal too as they both suck ....but if sellers get a receipt for proof of postage then thats good enough wether its lost or not !
I do now make sure anything i buy or sell is either local to pick up or posted (recorded delivery ) its not much & then they have to sign for it !! so your covered !

I think a lot of sellers wish there was an alternative.  There are in the US, but I looked at the UK equivalents and there just isn't the potential there yet in these alternative sites for those in the car business.  I do tend to try and keep some stuff off ebay and will only sell to UK buyers now (always seem to have problems with non UK buyers).  Every single transaction went down the tubes losing me money.
Have just had exactly that conversation with my better half ( have to put that as she is reading the posts - and the settee is uncomfy!!) and i explained that unfortunately by the time you spread the word enough to get a decent ammount of sellers and items listed people would have gone back to ebay every time! gggrrrrr wonder if the monopolies (sp) commision would help out lol :D :D or a watchdog like ebaycom??? ;D

Ebay don't seem to want to get involved in any disputes , presumably because it would cost too much to employ the staff to handle them all.

All they seem to be interested in is raking off their commision/listing fees , and letting the system police itself through the feedback system.

I think it is  backfiring on them because at the moment it's working in favour of the scammer/dickhead and against the honest user.

Sure I read somewhere that they weren't doing too well financially . I wonder why.

Serves the greedy money grabbers right - hope they become a victim of the credit crunch  :)

One of our admins  ::) I recall gave his opinion that the new ebay policy of "buyers" only leaving feedback was nothing but a good thing, and would expose rogue sellers.

I actually agree for the most, but I can also see that in exceptional circumstances like this, it can work the other way.

I personally feel feedback on any transaction should be a 2 way thing - but that's just me :y

There are some right yoyos on ebay that's for sure .

I had a door mirror on recently and a guy bought it Buy it Now for £10 , without asking me anything about it, then proceeded to complain because it wasn't colour coded and he'd wanted a silver one and it was manual and he'd wanted an electric one.

I mean what can you say?

He was intent on giving me -ve feedback but eventually managed to convince him he perhaps should have asked about it first.

It was a close call and maybe I should have described it in total detail in the first place, but you often just stick things on and let people ask questions about it .

I think the new rules are for the better.  And Paypal have always ruled in my favour (eventually).

I am probably split 50:50 on buying/selling.

As a seller on ebay, why shouldn't you have to accept the same risks as if you were a business selling mailorder?

Yeah thats fair comment but when i state "terms and conditions" why should other people dictate to me when THEY will be collecting the item? after i not only put it in my advert but re-iterated it to them via a "private message"???
Then for my up front honesty i get negative feedback?

As a seller, you have to accept there will be a number of idiots - same as in mail order business.

There used to be several alternative UK auction sites, Yahoo springs to mind. I think they were made an offer they couldn't refuse, so packed up. Funny that, today's large businesses, the ones that control things, didn't get where they were by being best, they got there by anhilating the competition

I got stung recently, bought a toner cartridge for the laser. It was nicely packaged in a recyle box, shrink wrapped etc, so I put it on the shelf. When I came to use it, I found out it was empty, and crapbay had closed the seller's A/C. I emailed them asking for a copy of the auction, but they never bothered replying. £28 down the drain.

Paypal are voluntary members of the FSA, so  you can sometimes push their hand by threatening to complain to the FSA.

I have 2 ID's, just in case some clown destroys my 1000+ feedback.

I don't know what would be a good alternative to ebay. Exchange and Mart used to be a good way of sourcing stuff, although it didn't cater for small items. And Micro-mart used to be good for computer stuff. The beauty of these was you could always take legal steps to complain if things went wrong, cause you knew the person's address or phone number, but with paypal accounts you have no idea who/where you are dealing with.

I don't know what would be a suitable alternative these days, how about OOF-Auctions.  :y :y :y

Why?
Mail order is slightly different ..... i had an advert yes , but i also "warned" if you like the person that in response to their previous question that wouldnt be acceptable - that i wanted collection by a set date?
I know numpty's exsist but i shouldnt accept this as a risk of selling when i have made myself crystal clear,  and i certainly shouldnt expect negative feedback that i can do nothing about  at least under mail order rules you have a chance to put your side across with ebay it seems like you sell= you lose, you buy= you win?

As I say, I largely agree with you that the new measures will bring a positive impact - no dispute there.

But I also think it can open the door to abuse. If there is a feedback system, it should be as such that anyone concerned can make comments, or nobody at all?

That aside though, I think the best advice, is not to trade (buy or sell) on ebay, if the item is of such a value that you couldn't afford to get burnt...  ::)

Mail order is covered by legally enforcable rules, that should protect both parties. Unfortuntely Ebay is not covered by anything. They can do what the hell they like.

I have also been burned by two sellers not liking the fact that I gave honest (non inflammatory feedback) factually describing for example that a pc didn't work cause the RAM was defective and they were most unhelpful.

BUT I think rules should be flexible, not applied wholesale.  There are times when ebay SHOULD permit u to make negative comments about bad buyers.., because sellers deserve protection as well as buyers.

Ken
Coblers, Mail order is protected by laws that benefit the consumer only. One of the family businesses has been there, done that, lost £20k, remodelled business not to do mail order.

As I write the workflow software for them, I have to be aware of all the possible loopholes.
